Group Presentation Paper
For week two of the learning assignment our group discussed the upcoming presentation for class. The task for the group was to come up with three theorists, or theories that our group could use for the presentation. Prior to our Wednesday night meeting the group members were asked to come with at least three possible ideas that they could each present to the group. Group members A, B, C, and D came prepared to the discussion with some great thoughts and ideas on what the presentation should be about. Some of the ideas that were brought to the group were, Leaning Theory, Stage Theory, Erikson’s Stages of Development, Kohlberg’s Moral Reasoning, Social Exchange, Field Theory, Empowerment Theory, and Crisis Intervention. Each member discussed their own reasoning behind the choices they came up with and all had very good points to consider. After much debate on each of the topics the group decided on Social Exchange Theory for the groups presentation. Social Exchange Theory emphasizes the group and focuses on behavior of each individual group members. The theorists suggest that when people interact in groups they are doing …show more content…
Each member appeared to be engaged in the decision of the topic and felt that Social Exchange Theory was something of interest to all involved in the group. In addition, group members A, and C suggested incorporating a specific group population into the presentation so that we could focus on more specifics information to research and report on the topic. The group did discuss that our presentation could really focus on a clinical model of group work such as substance abuse, or criminal justice populations. However, there did appear to be some resistance with group member B and she wanted clarification about group specifics from the course

The theory suggests ‘social change and stability as a process of negotiated exchanges between parties’ (Wikipedia). This means a cost and benefit approach for any involved party developed as the relationship develops. If this balance is compromised, the individual who feels they are giving more than they are receiving will invariably feel resentment and may, ultimately, dissolve the relationship. It takes into account that the value given to a certain cost or reward varies person to person. Originally coined by George Homans (1958). Peter Blau, Richard Emerson, John Thibert, Harold…

The exchange theory also affects cohesion of the group as the general tendencies emerge. The exchange effect begins as soon as a group is formed, but it takes a while for members to come up with a cost-benefit exchange analysis for themselves in the group. So the effect will not play a big part in the group dynamics until about midlife of the group. In a group, each member will mentally tabulate the rewards and costs to themselves in the areas of material things, social rewards, prestige, esteem, accomplishment of the job and recognition. If the plusses are more than the minuses, then the member will stay and add to the cohesiveness of teamwork and the group. If the negatives are greater than the positives, then the member will either become a point of non-cohesion in the group or will leave. If the member leaves, then, by the assembly effect, the group will still struggle with cohesion because the whole new order of assembly will then occur.…

As a group we have assessed group 1’s presentation on Usain Bolt and his leadership styles/theories. Their presentation was agreeable on the fact that they provided 3 or more leadership theories based upon the relevant information, and was as a whole able to obtain the purpose of the whole presentation. When it came down to the presentation structure, our group has agreed to give them a score of 1, where we were able to identify that they demonstrated a clear structure with their visuals, numbers sections and subsections etc. The group was also able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the leadership theory, as they described this in depth, with sources to back what they have stated. As a result, with this section our group scored them a 1. The presentation did slightly however, lack depth in the clear application of theory to practice and having a critical approach adopted, this was quite thoroughly explained however, and we felt it slightly lacked critical approach to what they stated so for this sector we scored them a 2. The group did show evidence of wider reading and this was of a large scale, with numerous links online, books and articles etc. So for this we scored them a 1.…
