Group Research Paper- Online Platforms
Group Research Paper-

As a group you must review 5 online platforms of your choice (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Ideascale, etc.) that could be used by a virtual team in a company to communicate with their worldwide divisions. Your group must use your readings to research and create a “grading platform” to create criteria to “grade” each platform. For example, you could create a matrix that has ease of communication as measuring item. After your group has “graded” these platforms, each person in your group will then write their own 5 to 7 page paper to recommend whether or not Ford should use these platforms by using your grading matrix and your readings to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each platform. In the end, you should recommend one platform that would best meet Ford's needs based on your analysis. Your paper should include an ADDITIONAL one page "Executive Letter" addressed to the CEO of Ford Motor Company that summarizes your findings. Remember your must use your readings and outside sources as per the grading matrix.

According to the article, The Knowledge Advantage of Virtual Teams Processes Supporting Knowledge Synergy, it has been previously argued that virtual teams emerged as a new organizational form of 'working together apart'. A virtual organization can be defined as, “a geographically distributed organization whose members are bound by a long-term common interest or goal, and who communicate and coordinate their work through information technology” (Baack, 2012, Dimensions of Organizational Structure, 10.2). The advent of technology has paved the way for the existence of virtual organizations. The technological devices/concepts described below and others have made it possible to have remote workers and teams collaborate toward a common organizational purpose. Technology has allowed for information to be decentralized and shared across virtual platforms. From the employee perspective, there are a lot of pros to working in a virtual organization. Employees are able to work from the comfort of their homes and avoid commutes as well as stresses of the traditional office environment. However, employers must worry about a lack of employee supervision and an overreliance on technology. If a technical issue were to arise from e-working stations, there would be bigger losses in productivity. Miscommunication may also be greater with the lack of physical presence.…

As a manager of a virtual team I believe that it is extremely important to understand what key characteristics are needed in order for the team to flourish and excel. The ability to openly communicate, Understand cultural differences as well as overall knowledge of technology are some of the fundamentals I would be most concerned about. Communication is the major key to a prosperous team/group. If a team leader and/or group member has trouble with openly communicating with others, it will be impossible for team rules and regulations to be established. It is crucial for a virtual team to cohesively establish team deadlines, meetings in addition to a clear understanding of each individual task and responsibility. Along with communication, virtual teams must respect and accept cultural differences. According to Understanding Cultural Differences: Germans, French, and Americans (Intercultural Press: Yarmouth, ME; 1987) “Team members should learn how to interpret verbal and nonverbal communication styles and cultural backgrounds of teammates and how to respond effectively to these unique cues”. Acknowledgement and respect of cultural diversity reduces the chances of cultural crashes and miscommunication. Lastly as a virtual team member being proficient in basic technological platforms such as smartphones, laptops, texting, videoconferencing etc. is an absolute must. Without a basic foundation in this technology, effective communication between team members/managers may be disastrous.…

They received 600 completed surveys, and the full results were analyzed in a report. In their report it is stated that; overall, participants in the survey confirmed that virtual teams present unique challenges that are culturally based and can be counterproductive unless managed effectively. While the hurdles that virtual teams face ware not surprising to them, they were struck by the depth and breadth of the challenges. They also found that virtual teams face many of the same challenges that all teams face, but language difficulties, time‐and‐distance challenges, the absence of face‐to‐face contact, and above all, the barriers posed by cultural differences and personal communication styles make virtual work far more complex (RW3 Culture Wizard - Virtual Team Survey Report,…
