Group Therapy Observation
On February 10th 2017, I went to Hickory Grove Elementary School in the Brookville School District to observe in the speech therapy room. The speech room was a separate classroom that the kids would get pulled out of class to come to in order to receive therapy. During the hour that I observed the speech language pathologist, or SLP, saw a total of 5 kids; she had three kids in the first group and two kids in the second. It is a rather small school, so Mrs. Ferris, the SLP, is the only speech language pathologist working in that particular elementary school. In group therapy sessions, the SLP cannot have anymore than three students in a group so that all the students can get individualized attention. Before the students came into Mrs. Ferris’ classroom she warned me that one student likes to make up stories and pretend that they actually happened to him and that his buddy in the group tends to back him up. So as the students came into the classroom and made conversation with Mrs. Ferris I was able to observe this behavior right off the bat. Almost the first thing out of this student’s mouth was a lie, but Mrs. Ferris called him on it. She likes to tell him to write all his stories now and make a book instead of lying to people. I did however notice that one student had a slight tick; every couple seconds he would scrunch up his nose and this behavior continued the entire length of the therapy session. The only other thing I observed is that one student would answer Mrs. Ferris’ questions before she was even done saying them. Mrs. Ferris seemed to be aware of the students behaviors in both groups and did her best to direct the behaviors into something more constructive. With persistent work the student’s behaviors will be able to be reshaped and changed into something more efficient and

    Laurie lied about who Charles was to be able to talk to his parents about something without them knowing that Charles did not exist and the he was the one committing all of the acts that were claimed to be Charles. Laurie had lied about Charles in every scenario that had truly been him, both positive and negative, this means that Laurie had lied to his parents quite a lot, making himself a rather large liar. One of these many instances occurred when “Charles yelled during story hour and hit a boy in the stomach and made him cry.”(347), once again lying about who had really completed those acts.     The few things I did know about when it came to behavior disorders was that they are one of the thirteen category covers under IDEA. I also knew that when working with individuals with behaviors you have to be very patient and be aware of the individual’s diagnosis. From this experience I learned a lot of the paperwork that needs to be completed for individuals with behaviors disorders. I also got to witness first-hand how to deal with a behavior when it happens. The experience I got to witness first hand was when a male student was sent out of his general education classroom to Kristen’s classroom since he treated his teacher, since she was not helping him with his work. The first thing Kristen did when he walked in the classroom was ask him if he wanted to talk about what happened or take some time to calm down. The student decided to calm down first. Once he was calmed down Kristen walked over to him and asked him what happened in a very strict and calm way. When she finally figures out what happened she explained to the student that he is going to have to deal with the repercussions of his actions as well as fill out a form explaining what happened.     First off, when a person under 18 is sent to a speech therapist by their teachers and parents, they don’t have a choice of being there even if they don’t want to be. To handle a person who does not think they need therapy, an SLP must motivate them to want to be there by exploring what they like and incorporating it into their lessons. If someone is over 18, they don’t have to be in speech therapy if they don’t want to be. The next thing I discovered is about the caseloads/workloads of an SLP. Some facilities determine the amount of patients being seen by one SLP by the caseload, and others by the workload. Caseloads are determined by numbers of patients, regardless of the severity of their cases, and workloads are determined by the number of patients based on the severity of their cases. If a speech-language pathologist works somewhere that goes by caseloads rather than workloads, it tends to be harder to manage all of their patients. “The most challenging area of this occupation seems to be the amount of paperwork that is required to be done by the SLP. In a usual day as a speech-language pathologist, the day is split into 75/25 ratio.     And when the child was doing anything the therapist would ask him to say everything he does. She would use different game tactics to get him to speak using the terms and actions they just did to make him pronounce the words he was struggling with, affect the actions that were happening in past tense form, and knowing the opposite of another word. When the child did something he was encouraged and asked for a high five praised for what he did correctly. And when he didn’t answer something correctly or didn’t want to do it he would distract himself because he didn’t want to do it. The therapist would then ask again or rephrase it differently, but it didn’t take more than twice for the child to have the correct answer. When he spoke and answered some of the questions you can tell he was a reader and was smart for his age.     The ratio was 4:18 on the day of the observation. There were three teachers, one speech language pathologist, and 18 students. Also one teacher is fluent in Spanish and can serve as a translator if needed. I would consider the number of students to be restrictive. The physical space while all the teachers and the students were in the room, felt very cramped. Children can’t have as much physical actions because there were so many of them. In addition to the physical space restriction, there is also a restriction on one-on-one interaction with a teacher.
