New England, in 1770 the approximate population was about 235,000. 97% of that population was whites and the other 3% were African Americans. The population in the Southern Colonies was two times larger than New England’s, and the middle colonies. The reason for the booming population growth was because the slaves made up most of it. In the early 1700s the population was about 20,000, and during the 1770s it increased to about 400,000 people. The majority of slaves worked in plantation agriculture. The reason I think slavery was a big deal in the South was because Whites weren’t willing to do the hard labor so therefore they bought slaves and made them do it for little or no money at all.
