GS 102 Written Assignment 1
The nine properties of life are order which states that all structures or activities have a relationship, to all other structures, and activities to function and maintain Homeostasis. Metabolism is the organized chemical steps that breakdown and build up molecules. Organisms need energy and convert it into a form that helps with the bodily process. Motility states that the organisms use their own power to move them around. Responsiveness is how organisms perceive the environment and react to it. Reproduction occurs when organisms produce others of the same type. Development is the ability of an organism to grow and change. Heredity is the ability of an organism to pass along traits from its parents to their off springs. Evolution is how a species transforms over time to adapt to its environment. Adaptations allow the organisms to change and adapt to their environment.
Viruses, Prions, and viroids are not considered to be alive because they need a cell to encounter a cell and they live off it. Their change is due to their hosts altered responses and not their own.

Living things that are well adapted to their environment survive and reproduce. Those that are not well adapted don’t survive and reproduce. Any inherited trait that increases an organism’s ability to survive is called an adaptation. Remember that these adaptations are inherited traits; they are not changes that an individual chooses to make and that increases fitness, which is defined as the ability to survive and reproduce.…

Evolution is basically the change in the heritable characteristic or traits in living organisms which are passed from one generation to another and gives rise to diversity at every stage of the organism’s biological organisation. The process of evolution was not well understood until 19th century when Charles Darwin proposed the scientific theory of natural selection as a driving tool in evolution. The process involved both the macroevolution in which organisms went through major evolutionary changes over a long period of time and acquired different traits from different parents or ancestries and the microevolution in which a group of organisms went through minimal changes with time but the traits they acquired were typically from the same ancestor.…

Living things have seven shared characteristics connecting all of them: reproduction, growth and development, energy use, order, cells, response to the environment, and evolution. When reproducing, all organisms birth their own species and never stray from the natural instinct. After birth, the organism matures and thanks to information they acquire genetically, develop certain features. An example of this is male deer producing antlers in adolescence. While maturing and throughout its entire life, the deer consumes energy through nourishment and uses it as a driving force to move and carry out normal functions.…

Recently, there has been a debate about rather or not laws that govern induced pluripotent stem (IPS) cells differ from those currently in place for human embryonic stem (ES) cells. An IPS cell is created artificially from skin, fat and fibroblasts by reprogramming patient 's own cells. Scientists believe IPS cells to be a promising source for treating diseases. An ES cell is created by destroying an embryo. Other scientists think ES cells will also be a promising source because it is composed of your own DNA, so the immune system won 't reject the cell. While scientists would agree that the same laws should apply because they believe in finding a cure to diseases, other people would disagree. Some people would say that ES cells are unethical because scientists need a human egg donor, and they must destroy a human embryo. The laws should not be the same for ES cells as they are for IPS cells because the creation for ES cells are unethical. No general full fledged definition for life has been articulated since time, but lists of properties have been suggested to discern ‘the inert/non-living’ from ‘the living’ of which a an organism has to posses in order for it to be considered as a living being. These include self organization or movement, growth, reproduction, inheritance, feeding, excretion, sensitivity and adaptation. Moreover, the question of what life is takes us back to evolution, that is, for an organism to be considered living, it has to be part of the fossil record. Even so, there are living organisms which do not show some of these characteristics of life.…

Viruses cannot reproduce without the help of living cells. A Virus has to infect a cell and once the cell is infected it will marshal the cells ribosomes and enzymes to reproduce. A prion is mostly protein and although proteins are components of living cells, a prion is not. The interesting thing about prions are they are like viruses but without the DNA or RNA and in order for a prion to reproduce or be considered alive it must force living cells to do the reproduction for them. Viroids are found only in plant cells. They consist of a piece of RNA that is very small. Like a Virus and Prion, Viroid depends on other host of factors to replicate. Viroid and Prions are agents that are infectious but can’t transmit diseases.…
