The prison in Guantanamo Bay has been used for the last ten years holding suspected terrorists and third country nationals who allegedly had conflict against the United States. The Guantanamo Bay detention camp is a controversial detainment and interrogation facility of the United States military located within Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba. The facility was established 11 January, 2002 by the Bush Administration to hold detainees from the war in Afghanistan and later Iraq. It is operated by the Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO) of the United States government in Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, which is on the shore of Guantánamo Bay. The detainment areas consist of three camps: Camp Delta (which includes Camp Echo), Camp Iguana, and Camp X-Ray, the last Camp X-Ray is now closed. The facility is often referred to as Guantánamo, G-Bay or GTMO, after the military abbreviation for the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base. However, in recent weeks, several countries, including Portugal and Germany, have publicly indicated that they are willing to help the United States close the detention facility at Guantánamo Bay. This is welcome news, and it will perhaps motivate other countries to help as well.
