Gudea, was king of the kingdom of Lagash in the late 3rd Century (Leon, 1904). He was devoted to temples and statues of the gods people worshiped during this time. During his reign, there were numerous statues created in his image (Leon, 1904).

After much debate, it was deemed this sculpture was created during the 4th dynasty, which would be considered 2575-2465 B.C. (Met Museum, ND). The initial impression of this creation is this must have been a happy couple. The man has a slight grin, is standing tall with his arm around the woman. The woman in the sculpture has a content look on her face and is also embracing the man. The images of both highly suggest that they were together and happy. During this era, spouses frequently had sculptures created to be placed in hidden tombs in the Old Kingdom’s chapels (Weebly, 2002). Although it was not factually confirmed they were husband and wife; the assumptions are that they were.
Comparisons
Both of these manifestations were of equal greatness and importance but greatly differ in what was being symbolized. While the Statue of Gudea, was a portrayal of self-importance and reflection; Memi and Sabu’s Statue was more of a symbol and an announcement of love between to people.
