The reason I choose Guillain-Barre syndrome are because this a rare and deadly disorder. “Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is a disorder in which the body's immune system attacks part of the peripheral nervous system” (Guillain-Barre Syndrome Fact Sheet). Guillain-Barre is a very unusual disease and it tends to affect people who do lots of traveling outside of the country and in small populations. Even though it’s a rare disorder, it affects people of all ages and race. Adults are more affected by the syndrome than children. The first signs and symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome is numbness, tingling and muscle pain. Other symptoms of Guillain-Barre syndrome include: difficulty walking steadily, difficulty swallowing, severe back pain, fast heart rate, and difficulty breathing. Guillain-Barre syndrome is unusual an autoimmune syndrome in which the body’s immune system affects portions of the outer nervous system. “As the myelin is slowly removed, nerves can no longer transmit information such as touch sensations to the brain, hence the numbness” (Newman, T.). In addition, the brain is no longer able to transmit signals back to the body; this explains the muscle weakness. This is because the nerves running to the lower extremities are the longest in the body and, therefore, easier to attack and compromise. Research has shown that vaccine reactions are strongly associated with vaccination for the flu virus than any other vaccine. “In 1976 there was a small increased risk of GBS following vaccination with an influenza vaccine made to protect against a swine flu virus” (Influenza (Flu)). This is a vaccine giving to people who have cervical cancer. Other studies have reported 72% of people have GBS after getting the Gardasil vaccine six weeks after their shot. “Acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP), the most common form in the U.S. The most common sign of AIDP is muscle weakness that starts in the lower part of your body and spreads upward” (Guillain-Barre syndrome can cause…).
Diagnosis
In the early stages of Guillain-Barre syndrome, it’s difficult to diagnose. Guillain-Barre syndrome is based on “neurological examination neurological examination including diminished or loss of deep-tendon reflexes” (Guillain–Barré syndrome). To get supportive information the physician would do a lumber puncture, but it shouldn’t delay treatment. Its signs and symptoms that’s similar to neurological disorders and vary from person to
