A student at Sherwood Middle School in Sherwood, Oregon says that they would like gum to help them focus.
“It helps me work more efficiently. I can chew instead of zone out. I pulls me into reality and assists me in my school work.”
Another student, saying that hats are an essential fashion statement.
“Hats complete the outfit, and they like, block the sun I guess.” Students at Sherwood Middle School request to be able to have gum and hats at their school. Studies have shown that gum can help certain students focus, and students want hats as a way to express themselves. Most students think that there is no harm in wearing these toppers into school, however, teachers say that gum is unquestionably messy, and students that aren't responsible enough to throw it away properly. They also say that hats can be distracting to other students if they are large enough. Gum at Sherwood Middle School has always been a big issue. Several students feel it is an irrational rule. Students just comment it is a way of expressing themselves, yet they still don’t get to wear them. Hats are used for special event days, such as spirit week. One student points out, that if students are allowed to wear hats on those days, why not every day? A statement from an article on the matter, states that students should be allowed to wear hats in school, because they spend most of the daytime at school, not counting sleeping.
