Gun Control
Did you know that guns prevent an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year? There are many dangers in the world other than criminals. The United States Constitution was signed to defend the rights of the people. Gun control laws are too constraining because guns are used to prevent violent crimes, guns are used for self-defense and it is every American’s right to keep and bear arms. Dr. Kleck, Ph.D., has been conducting research to show that American civilians commonly use their privately-owned firearms to defend themselves against criminal attacks, and that such defensive uses significantly outnumber the criminal use of firearms in America (Schulman, 2007). This information is based on research that is a small percent of the United States population. American civilians use their firearms as often as 2.5 million times every year in defending themselves against a confrontation with a criminal (Schulman, 2007). Crimes are committed on a daily basis, and the police cannot always be there to protect American civilians. Police reports are made every day, yet criminals are not apprehended. Security guards are limited in what they can and cannot do. Security guards are mainly there to “observe and report” while waiting for the police. Military personnel are trained to defend themselves, and the lives of others, in war, not against criminals. It was stated in the survey that the definition of “defense” has to be an actual confrontation against a human being attempting a crime. This excludes all police, security guards, and military personnel (Schulman, 2007). Dr. Kleck’s research shows a number of these defensive uses were against a burglar, which is not considered a personal crime, according to the National Crime Survey. Some statistics from his surveys show about 29% of confrontations involved some sort of assault other than sexual assault. 33% of these confrontations involved
