In an effort to lower crime in America, our government created gun control laws. These laws add somewhat necessary complications in order to acquire a firearm. There is a license and requirements that apply for owning a gun. The problem with these requirements is that they fall short of gun control as it does not reduce crime and only affects those the population who got a firearm legally. The result of this is the weakening of the second amendment. The most recent acts created for "gun control" mute the second amendment and are unable to lower crime rates. These acts have misplaced ideas that gun related crime is mainly committed by those who have a gun legally.
America’s gun control is affecting the wrong people. The more recent acts created only people who have licenses for their firearms. The largest issue with this is that people who commit crimes with legal weapons is a major minority. A Chicago crime lab interviewed 79 inmates that had firearms in their crimes. It was found that only 2 or 2.9 percent, had bought a gun at a gun store. The majority of crimes with firearms involve illegal trafficked guns not allowed to the public. These act's intention is to lower the crime rate but have misplaced ideas of who is responsible for that crime. They only limit legal weapons as if guns are responsible for crime. As we know, saying guns are responsible for crime is like saying cars is the reason for drunk driving. The majority of New York's weapons are legal. This because there are general laws in place saying some guns are illegal. As mentioned before the majority is being targeted and being punished for getting a weapon legally. Instead of targeting the legal portion of guns, target the weapons that are trafficked. If these acts want to commit to their intention they to establish anti-weapon-trafficking laws. Also, more strength needs to be added to our states borders. Of course smuggling checks do not need to high level security but comparable to what is done with drug smuggling inside the us. A decent measure added in these acts are background checks. These look at you criminal history and possible mental health issues. While this is a necessity, it does not have enough power to do what these acts were made to do. These background checks need to go one step further by looking at family history. If a person seems stable on the surface and has no criminal history, that does not mean that they completely deserve a gun. If that person has a abuse issues of other family problem that can make a
