As such, our brilliant insightful forefathers - being distrustful of government - realistically understood the perpetual danger on how easily a government (politicians) can turn a country from a democracy into a tyrannical totalitarian dictatorship. Moreover in their purpose, they further recognized the other reality that a country's standing military can completely be overwhelmed or defeated necessitating a last resort national defense entity made of commoners (re: citizen gun owners always armed with effective weaponry) to amass into "Minuteman" citizenry militias to defend their country fighting off a sinister invading foreign enemy. Consequently with this two-fold safeguard in mind, and as the pivotal and foremost defense of our freedom and preservation of democracy. our Constitution's Second Amendment was created.
Lastly to those well-meaning idealistic gun control advocates, while your feelings and endeavor may be kindly humanistic motivated with the best of intentions, in the real world, gun prohibition (gun control) is a Pollyanna notion fraught with more potential negatives and unintended treacherous outcomes. Personally I would rather live with a dangerous freedom than as a vulnerable citizen at the mercy of a government gone bad, or equally so, a hapless crime victim as those poor souls horrifically butchered by a domestic terrorist recently at a Charleston church while in a designated "gun-free
