Freshmen Focus Application
Explaining things that people don't understand has always been a strong point in my time within the community. In sports, specifically volleyball, I am more experienced than most of the people in my grade. When someone is having trouble with a skill like hitting or passing I gladly help them and explain things in a way that is easy to understand. Another quality that I have, is the ability to effectively communicate with others. Not only am I able to communicate with people that I am helping, but also with leaders within this club. I can communicate clearly and professionally through; email, text, verbally, and on the phone. When I have a planned absence from a sport’s practice, I notify my coach at least twenty-four hours before the scheduled start time. My work ethic has always been a strong point within my years of schooling. I have never been tardy to a class or skipped class to do things that I think are more important. Working in groups or teams has always been something I am good at. Working with teams efficiently and effectively is very important, this is especially shown on sports teams, were at practice if one person is slacking off it's harder for …show more content…
everyone to focus. Lastly, I possess the skill to problem solve quickly and efficiently. Life happens, and mistakes also happen, the ability to make up for those mistakes efficiently is crucial in a club like this where you are involving other people besides the people in this club. While I was at South Bay Community Church’s ‘Kidz Krew’, one of the kids went to the restroom in their pants. I was the only leader in that room so I had to get my supervisor and have them help me keep the kids away and to notify the parent.
At West, I am involved in extracurricular activities such as Volleyball and Cross Country.
Both being team sports I am surrounded by people whether I'm at practice or at a game/tournament. I am an experienced volleyball player and very commonly get asked questions about the skills required to play the sport such as hitting, passing, or setting, all of which I can answer. Answering those questions to the best of my ability is a goal of mind so that the other athlete can get a better understanding of what to do. In cross country, positivity is a big part of the sport since you're with such a big team. Keeping positivity when talking to the incoming freshmen is a huge part of this club since you want them to have the best time that they can have while they are at
West.
In the community, I am involved with many events involving children younger than me. At my church I am involved with 2 ministries; ‘Kidz Krew’ and ‘Legacy’. Kidz Krew is the children’s ministry at South Bay Community Church, I personally help with preschoolers. My job is basically to try and help the kids understand that they will be fine without their parents while they are in service. Understanding them without some of them using words is a challenge, but it has helped me understand what people are really trying to say when they say things. At Legacy the high school ministry, you are surrounded by fellow high school students from schools all over. This ministry has really helped my ability to communicate with people I don't know, and really perfected my ability to connect with them personally. Answering their questions about myself, and things that I enjoy is an excellent skill needed to talk to incoming freshmen. Lastly, I help with at least one Church’s VBS every year, sometimes two depending on my schedule. I usually work with first graders which have many questions, answering them efficiently is a challenge but is also something that I think I have perfected since then.
Yes, I attended ‘Warrior Welcome’. This event was really a great experience to not only meet people who are going to be in your grade, but also great for being able to walk around West, seeing inside the classrooms, and to get a feel for where the buildings and classrooms are. Also, the performances were a great touch for this event and really got me excited to go to high school. One thing that can be improved is trying to get the tour guides to explain more about how the room numbers go building, floor, room number. Besides that, I felt comfortable going into my first day of school at West High.
The classroom experiences with Freshmen Focus were cool and really pushed me to join the club since they were really helpful to me. The presentations towards the beginning were a little boring because it was about GPA and things that were already introduced to us in middle school, although this information was really important, the presentations could have been more fun. Towards the end of the semester, the presentations started to become more funny and enjoyable. My favorite video was the High School Olympics video telling us how to do things at West that make things go more smoothly. I liked how they had a list of clubs that were available at West and a small description of each club to get us introduced to what was offered at West. I already knew one of the delegates because they were my friend’s sister, also another one was my teacher's son and I played volleyball with him. But one of the delegates I've never seen, and I can confidently say that we were able to make a personal connection throughout the semester. I think that more funny videos should be presented to really catch the attention of the class, and get a little giggle out of them.
Telephone is a fun way to get information throughout the classroom. Although sometimes the information is altered so at the end of the telephone game the delegate should tell the class how the information started. I enjoy playing telephone even now and it is a fun and exciting way to get information to many people with the occasional laugh when the is completely altered from the beginning and trying to figure out who messed up.
Firstly we need to make sure everyone is still being safe throughout the misbehaving, as safety is a big priority everywhere. After we assess the situation we need to try to kindly as the students to remain in their seats and try to respect us while we are talking. We also want to make sure this process is efficient and effective since we are on a limited time stamp which we can't go over. If the situation is way out of hand and continues to be, we need to contact higher authority figures which include teachers, TAs, or student teachers. Aggressive voices only make situations worse so keeping a passive positive voice is key for handling these type of situations.
Yeah, after I get clarification if I am accepted into this club or not, I will make sure that all of these meetings and training will be attended to. Yes, meetings with production groups are important and will be attended to by me. The multiple weeks to attend will definitely be a help since I do have summer sports and things of that nature to attend. Again, sports and other things such as family events that we have not planned yet may come up, although I will do my best to plan around the dates of these events. One definite thing that I can not skip during the summer is Boys Junior Nationals Championships for volleyball; from July 1-8. Also, Cross Country practice will occur from 6:00-8:00 am every day in the summer. Boys Volleyball summer program has not been announced yet but will be around noon. Club Volleyball will usually have practice from 6:30-8:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Lastly, my Club Volleyball camp will be sometime towards the end of summer after July 8th.
