Ha is now at school. She has the same routine as everyone else. She stands when the bell rings, and lines up.
Ha goes to the lunchroom.
One side has all of the white kids, and the other side has all of the black kids.
The kids laugh, because they did not know someone korean would show up.
Ha is confused about where she will sit, because she describes herself as medium. She also doesn’t know what, or how to eat a corndog.
Ha thinks that the colors of the corndog are the way they are to make fun of the vietnamese flag.

References: to light and dark throughout the poem mirror the persona’s transition from childhood to adulthood, evident in the repetition in “Ambiguous light. Ambiguous sky”. This marks the shift from day to night, but also foreshadows the persona’s progression into adult maturity and acceptance that time is transient. Allison Hoddinott’s idea that time is the persona’s “enemy” enhances my understanding that the persona has had an ongoing conflict with the transience of time. Hoddinott’s idea is displayed through the metaphor, “stolen from me those hours of unreturning light”. The melancholy tone of the passing of time depicts the child as having a sense of ownership of time which has been irrevocably lost, highlighting that time is something which cannot be regained. Therefore, Harwood uses natural imagery in ‘The Violets’ to express an acceptance of the transience of time, and hence the persona shifts from the innocence of childhood to the maturity of adulthood.…

In “Resistance to Civil Government” Thoreau embodies the idea individual responsibility by refusing to pay taxes. Therefore, he is breaking the law but, he took this course of action due to the law violating his personal beliefs. This sets up the basis for his piece: people are morally obligated to break laws that violate their personal beliefs. He believes individuals should always rely on their own reasoning, due to the lack of morality in the highly corrupt government. The government is bound to make unjust laws because it is ruled by majority vote, not by reasoned or moral decisions. Thoreau's hope is that free-thinking individuals will take responsibility and defy government when it is making incorrect legislation.…

Opening the poem is a description of the setting and it begins to set up the solemn tone: “My older brother is walking down the sidewalk into the suburban summer night” (1-2). The term “sidewalk” begins its symbolic meaning in this first line and the suburban setting indicates they are a middle-class family. “The Boy” is taking place during the summer months when school is out of session when children have fewer restrictions and more free time. Following is the description of the boy, an ordinarily dressed child, which denotes his normalness, and the direction in which he is walking: “white T-shirt, blue jeans – to the field at the end of the street” (3).…
