Hamlet To Be or Not To Be
“To be or not to be”(III,i,1). Director Franco Zeffirelli put his spin on the classic shakespeare play, Hamlet in 1990. Working with known actors such as Mel Gibson, Glenn Close, Helena Carter, and Alan Bates, Zeffirelli brings this Denmark tragedy to life. Keeping his version of the screenplay similar to Shakespeare’s original play, the settings, costumes, and language blended nicely into historical times. This was not a good take on Hamlet and could have been a lot better. The director did not stay true to the author's intent. The scene was in modern times and to relate with the modern times things had to be changed. “O, what a rash and bloody deed is this!”(III,iv,31). During the Mother’s closet scene Ethan Hawke could have really brought Hamlet to life. Although he did not, Hamlet could have acted crazier and stayed true to the original play. Instead he seemed more dramatic with bad acting. When he shot the gun at closet he fell on the bed acting like he couldn't believe what he had just done. In the original play he was stabbed through a tapestry, making this rendition change the majority of the scene. “They exit, Hamlet tugging in Polonius”(III,iv,239). The setting was modern and involved a lot of guns, jewelry, and mansions, rather than swords, beautiful dresses, and castles. The actors wore modern clothes and lived in a skyscraper with luxurious beds, and movie screens. Although maybe if the language was redone into modern English maybe this could have been pulled off. “O, throw away the worser part of it, and live the purer with the other half”(III,iv,176-177). Michael Almereyda’s spin on Hamlet needed a lot of help, the setting, scenes, and costumes did not bring our Hamlet’s full
