Tragedy is a literary work dealing with serious and important themes in which a character of importance and status, through some personal flaw or error in judgment, meets destruction. A tragic hero is a literary character who makes a judgement error that inevitably leads to their own destruction. These definitions completely describe Hamlet. The play Hamlet was a tragedy and Hamlet himself was a tragic hero. Throughout the play Hamlet showed many acts to believe he was a tragic hero, including many errors and his own destruction.
Hamlet had many flaws but one of his most significant tragic flaws was his indecisiveness. In other words, he lacked the ability to act. Throughout the play Hamlet’s main goal was to get revenge and kill his uncle, Claudius. He had many opportunities to do so but he never acted on these chances. An example of a time Hamlet had an opportunity was after the play when Claudius was praying and unguarded. Hamlet could have easily stabbed his uncle at this time but decided to wait until Claudius was doing something sinful so he would not be sent to heaven.

Due to Hamlet’s inability to act, other people acted before him therefore resulting in these deaths. If Hamlet would have taken action and killed Claudius when he had the chance than this downfall would not have happened. Hamlet had many personal flaws and errors that definitely affected the outcome of the play. When he finally realized his flaws it was too late.
