On March 7th, 1980, two high school freshman were found smoking in the bathroom at Piscataway High School in Middlesex County, NJ. The students were escorted to the vice principal Mr. Choplick’s office. The defendant, TLO, who was one of the students that were caught smoking denied the accusation. Mr. Choplick inspected TLO’s purse and found a box of cigarettes. Afterward removing the box of cigarettes, he saw a pack of rolling papers. Mr. Choplick suspected that a closer examination of the purse may yield evidence of drug use and that a thorough inspection would be needed. After a thorough search, he found a small amount of marijuana, a pipe, a number of empty plastic bags, a large amount one dollar bills, an index card with a list of who…

The article continued with questions for Jerika about how she thinks the school made the switch from failing to successful. She liked how the school was project based and emphasize the students as being members of society. She says, “Being part of a group motivates you to be more involved in everything.” She says that although it is difficult to get the students to be engaged, when the teachers connect with their students, the students can ask questions in what they feel is a safe environment. She gives a word to other struggling high schools: “Putting out the message that [the…
Amy Rowley was a student at Furnace Woods School in the Hendrick Hudson Central School District; Peekskill, N.Y. Amy had very little if any residual hearing but, she was an excellent lip reader. A year before Amy was to attend school a meeting was set up for Amy and her parents to meet with the school administrator. It was a reciprocal decision to place Amy in a regular kindergarten class on a trial basis. Many administrators of the school were to take a course in sign language to help in the communications with Amy. The principal’s office was equipped with a teletype machine as both of Amy’s parents were also deaf. At the end of the trial basis it was decided by the administrators as well as Amy’s parents that she should stay in a regular classroom. Amy was provided an FM transmitter, which amplified the voice of the…

James Robert ‘Radio’ Kennedy is a 65-year-old handicapped man from Anderson, South Carolina, where the story of his involvement with T.L. Hanna High School takes place. This story was captured by the 2003 movie, “Radio”. The filmmakers condensed four decades of Radio’s story into one year from 1976 to 1977 in order to, what director Michael Tollin states, “show the convergence of events that led to Radio becoming an integral part of society in this small town”. What Tollin didn’t want to make was a biography. What he did want was to vaguely capture Radio’s story in order to give the film a “timeless quality” which would allow him to “focus more on the development of the relationship between the two central characters and their unity through their humanity”.…
I got the chance to interview a senior who goes to Casco Bay High School. His name is Zack and he's been at Casco bay since freshman year and this is his 4th and final year at Casco Bay. He's pretty tall and has short-ish red hair. When my whole class met up with seniors to interview I went and found him and everybody and their partner scurried off to start their interview. We went over to a big carpeted area called the great space. We went over to to a corner of the room I grabbed a comfy padded chair with a gold wooden frame.Zack grabbed a short plastic chair made to sit at for the keyboard in the room. Zack is wearing a flannel and I am too, I'm a bit nervous and he seems calm and ready. Around us other groups are starting, noise fills the air from other…
American School for the Deaf soon opened their gates to her when she was around…
Surprisingly, television reporters arrived on campus after finding students camping out and blocking traffic on Florida Avenue, one of the main streets (The History Behind DPN 6). Deaf President Now protests were immense enough to attract the attention of bystanders. Their cause is being acknowledged by others outside of Gallaudet due to their efforts to fight for their cause. Afterwards, Deaf President Now posted “flyers, [which] likened the protest to a civil rights movement, drawing parallels between the deaf community and other minority groups” (The History Behind DPN 6). The Deaf President Now group attempted to raise their needs to those of other groups, such as race equality. This method of external understandment made their protests more effective, meaningful, and successful. Furthermore, during the next few…
Johnny’s parents are his biggest supporters. They knew that his visual impairment would make even the simplest task difficult for him. They want Johnny not only to receive a quality education but they also want him to have a great experience with his passion for music. Their biggest concern is of course Johnny’s well-being. The school is two-stories so it is important that there is an elevator for Johnny, as they fear he may fall or be pushed down the stairs due to being in a hurry to get from one class to the other. Johnny’s parents also worry that Johnny will not make it to the right classes and that he may get lost. The school is equipped to help those with visual impairments. The classrooms and offices have Braille directly on the door underneath the room number or office name. Johnny’s parents want him to be able to interact with other students and gain the social skills that are necessary in everyday life.…
