Port Allen High School Case Study

Financial stability at Port Allen High School is an issue every day. Compared to Brusly High School, which is the only other high school in the West Baton Rouge Parish, the school is struggling. Although teachers and faculty work to make the best out of the financial situation. Students and teachers must pitch in to help the school raise money in the forms of student bake sales, teachers applying for grants, and getting sponsors for the school.
The reason why Port Allen High has financial instability is because the school has a reputation or stereotype. Parents do not want to send their kids to a potentially bad school. Port Allen is stereotyped for being a ghetto school because the majority of the students are African American and most students
The most common way Port Allen High students raise money for such thing is bake sales and market sales. In bake sales students buy baked goods from the store or make baked goods at home and they bring them to school. At lunch is the only time when students can sell their goods. Teacher permission and supervision is required for these types of things. Although a conflict of interest is students not getting approval from the teachers to host a bake sale because teachers simply can't supervise students. The way to solve the problem is to get teachers who are available at certain times. For example, having one teacher take one break to supervise then another teacher can fill the position once the other teacher leaves. A student points out a way in which students get involved is being part of Beta Club. Every year Beta Club sells World Finest chocolate to either students, faculty, or anyone outside of school. The money is fundraised for the school and the school gains a sponsor for the school. The problem is not everyone is in the Beta Club but students can be encourage to buy what other students are selling. At this point every student can help fundraise the money for their school. Teachers can help this instability by signing up for grants, having school merchandise, and paying out of pocket for school supplies. Parents can help by getting involved with after school activities, and supporting the Port Allen High. The important thing to take away is there are multiple ways to help Port Allen High raise money for the school and they have been very resourceful in using all students, teachers, and parents to support their
