Acres Home Community Assessment and High School Dropout Rates Among African-American Residents

Introduction
The Acres Home community in north Houston has a rich history and culture. The community began has a rural community and has maintained many aspects of its rural roots as the Houston Metropolitan area has expanded around it. However, there are several problems facing the current population of Acres Home. One of the most significant problems is the high school dropout rate, particularly within the African-American community. The high school dropout rate of African American high school students within the Acres Home community (specifically, Eisenhower High School) has shown consistently high numbers over recent years. Major causes of the elevated dropout rate include: a high poverty rate, low education levels of the community as a whole, lack of parental engagement, and poor academic performance. The site coordinator will then reach out to community organizations and churches for resources to meet the needs of the individual child.
Outcome: Students will have their basic needs meet that he or she might otherwise go without. This will address one of the main causes of high school dropouts among students from Acres Home- financial concerns at home.
Sub-goal 2: Develop a Mentor/Peer Support program to motivate students to become more proactive and involved in their own learning and create a support network that students may rely on in their future education and careers
Objective: Create expectations for success, offer encouragement and provide academic support for students who are struggling
