Q1.2. Essential Writing Assignment: “The Devil and Tom Walker” Essential Writing Policy: Because writing is an essential element of the English curriculum, students should not be able to earn a passing grade if they have not demonstrated that they are proficient writers. Therefore, two assignments per quarter will be identified as “Major/Essential Writing Assignments.” Students who do not earn a C- or better will have to revise the assignment and resubmit until they earn the minimum C- grade. Students who need additional support/assistance to improve their writing will be able to do so outside of class time by utilizing one of the many resources available before, during and after the school day. Toward the end of “The Devil and Tom Walker,” Tom begins to wonder what kind of future he faces, given the deal he has made with the Devil. Write an essay about how Tom tries to assume the role of a devoted religious man. Cite three actions he takes toward this end and give your opinion about whether these actions actually change his life. Paper Requirements:
- At least 2-3 properly cited quotes per BODY paragraph
- Use the story, “The Devil and Tom Walker” as your source (BE SURE TO CITE IT IN A WORKS CITED) o The internal, parenthetical citations should include the author’s last name and page number from Subtext
- Use of transitions within and between all paragraphs
- Funnel introduction with an clear thesis
- 3 body paragraphs that have a clear topic/point sentence, strong support of all quotes and ideas (did you fully answer the “why” and explain how your evidence proves the point you are making?), and an end sentence that wraps-up your paragraph, but it does not preview the next paragraph.
