The English 198 Syllabus

The English 198 syllabus is divided into multiple, well-defined sections that provide the reader an easy way to find the class’ core goals, policies, and assignments. It explains that English 198 is a “writing intensive course,” meaning that its primary focus is to improve writing skills through the completion of various written assignments. These assignments will not only build writing skills, but will also test comprehension of material and other critical interdisciplinary skills that will be of vital importance in the years here at the University of Tennessee and in the work force. As the class is “writing intensive,” students should expect to write no less than 5000 words over the course of the semester. Along with the written assignments,
there will be quizzes, peer reviews, and a presentation. In-class participation is a major aspect of this class and therefore for every class missed after three, there will be a reduction of half a letter grade from the final grade for the course. Along with the attendance policy, another important policy is the academic integrity and plagiarism policy. Plagiarism of any kind will not be tolerated in English 198 and will be reported to the Dean and the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards. It is also important to note, as it was enclosed in a box on the syllabus, that unless given permission otherwise, technology is not allowed in the classroom In reviewing the syllabus, I believe my main responsibilities are very clear: show up to every class prepared, having completed the assignments and assigned reading, and be willing to own up to and learn from every mistake. For me, I believe the main challenges will come in the writing assignments since I have never written college papers and do not know what to expect and in managing my time. I will do my best to meet these challenges by following all instructions and attending office hours whenever I feel I need the extra help.
