Happy In Brave New World

Imagine living in a world where everybody is happy. In a normal society one might believe this is impossible to achieve; in the story, Brave New World it has been successfully achieved. Pain, jealousy, and negative emotions are things that people in this society do not have to worry about. Everybody in the World State is happy, because of Soma, there are no negative emotions, and because there is no individuality. Soma makes people feel happy. In the novel it states, “The warm, the richly coloured, the infinitely friendly world of soma-holiday. How kind, how good-looking how delightfully amusing everyone was!”(huxley,77). In the World State, Soma makes everything look better, and makes everyone feel better. Since Lenina, Henry, and Abby took Soma, they were instantly happy. The narrator says, “By this time the Soma had begun to work. Eyes shome cheeks were flushed, the inner light of universal benevolence broke out in every face in happy, friendly smiles.”(huxley,81). As soon as the Soma began to kick in, they experienced a transformation. This transformation was a joyful, delightful experience. Soma makes people jubilant, and everybody consume it. In this society everybody is happy because there are no pessimistic emotions. Lenina says, “Why you don't take soma when you have these dreadful ideas of yours. You'd forget about all of them and instead of feeling miserable, you’d be jolly.”(huxley,92). This drug, Soma, eliminates the negative vibes. In this society there are no gloomy emotions because as soon as a person is getting a bad vibe, they can take Soma and forget about them. One of the sleep teaching lessons says, “When the individual feels, the society reels”(huxley,94). This sleep teaching lesson means that when people feel emotions, dreadful things happen.
