Toronto’s Harbourfront was once the city’s shipping and business trades in 1893 (Hanan, 2017). Located at Queen’s Quay West, it is one of the city’s historical attractions today. In 1972, the federal government of Pierre Trudeau planned to make the Harbourfront become a public space for Torontonians for its goal to attract tourists with its cultural centres, recreational activities, and educational programmes; it was later fulfilled in 1976 (“History of harbourfront centre,” 2015, par. 3 & 6). Additionally, harbourfront garnered about 17 million tourists each year, holding over 4,000 events and programmes annually, and it is Canada’s most famous tourist attractions (par. 4 & 6). 2). The Geography of Harbourfront extends all along Toronto’s waterfront, starting at Bathurst and goes all the way to Jarvis Street. The history around Harbourfront goes all the way back to the 1800s when it was created from a landfill. It soon became busy because warehouses, railway tracks, and factories were all along the shoreline (pg. 3).These building caused Harbourfront to be closed off to the rest of Toronto until 1972. It can ruin the city’s plans of reenergizing the harbourfront area. People in the community would have to watch out how close their boats could come to airport, the noise that would come from the jets and many of the projects that the city wanted to do for the area would have to be cancelled or adjustments in the plans would have to be made in order to accommodate the expansion. (Leal,2014) If the airport does not change, there are no other negative impacts to developing the area. The city is putting money into this area to develop it. They finished the Queen’s Quay Revitalization right before the PanAm Games. This revitalization included new bike lanes to help more people to get by and see the sites. (This is what the new Queens Quay looks like in Toronto, 2015) One of the many other new things that are happening in this area is the many condominiums being built. There are many condos in the Harbourfront area that are from the 1980’s, this adds to the sightlines that we see everyday. With more and more popping up, appearance matters. Being one of the most visited places on Toronto, we want to keep our designs of the buildings different and stylish.
