Harm Reduction
Injury control and harm reduction is a strategy to prevent someone from getting hurt or harmed. Injury control and harm reduction pertain more to ages two through six. Children ages two through six do not understand the risks and dangers in simple and difficult tasks in life, so the parents and guardians of the child obtain a way to minimize the risks. One way to reduce harm and control injuries is to install baby gates to prevent a child from entering a part of the home where it is unsafe like a stairway. Another way to reduce harm and control injuries for a child is to keep away unnecessary objects around the house to prevent children from shoving in their mouths or choking on.

To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment I model safety practices and healthy routines in an environment that supports development and growth in these areas. My goal is to provide a clean healthy environment that meets each child’s physical needs. Making sure the classroom and playground are clean and safe at all times reduces the number of injuries of children while they are in my care. One of the ways I do this is by supervising children at all times by sight and sound even during nap times. Making sure all outlets are covered so children can’t access them. I make sure inside as well as outside there is nothing children can harm themselves on such as sharp objects or small items they can choke on. I ensure that all chemicals and cleaning supplies are put away out of the reach of children or stored in locked cabinets. I am certified in First Aid and CPR, which makes me knowledgeable of caring for accidents or injuries.…

One of my goals is to promote safety and reduce all injuries in a preschool setting all day and every day. This is an important goal for the age group of children in my care because children aren’t aware of all the various types of things there are that might harm them. So childproofing something I do to promote safety for the children in my center. Another big safety precaution I follow is the never turn my back on children policy because if I am aware of what the children are doing more than likely no one will get hurt. Another safety precaution I take is to remind children to use walking feet, nice hands, listening ears, and indoor…

Child safety has been a major concern among families especially in homes. Research has shown majority of these injuries occur with children under the age of 5 years old are not intentional injuries and can be avoided with proper parental supervision (Ablewhite, J., Peel, I., McDid,L., Hawkins,A., Goodenough,T., Deave, T., Stewart, J., Kendrick, D. 2015, p. 2). Harm reduction is the approach of making drug using safer people who use drugs. It helps to make drug usage cleaner since it’s deeming harder and harder to actually stop one from using drugs. This approach educates users on the effects of drug usage and gives them other options when seeking help to get off drugs. There are a few underlying assumptions to the harm reduction approach. As explained my Muraskin & Roberts (2009), one underlying assumption is that society needs to know that a drug free one is impractical and should accept other means to help control drug use. The second assumption is that any and all drug use should be held to the same standards, whether they are legal or illegal. The third assumption is that not all drug users should…
