Twilight versus Harry Potter
Witches and wizards, werewolves and vampires; they're all over the place in today's pop culture; Team Edward versus Team Jacob or Gryffindor House versus Slytherin House. Good versus evil. Which one is more age appropriate? Which one teaches the most valuable lessons?
A popular theme in many works written for children and teenagers is the creation of an unusual world. Often in these works, a character leaves their typical life in the first world and arrives into the other world, only to come back home at the end of the story. For each, these worlds remain an influential part of their lives and they choose not to leave the world at the end of the novel. To both characters, the worlds are more appealing to them than their previous lives. Even though they face many unsafe circumstances, eventually they benefit from the experience.
Before discovering the wizarding world, 11-year-old Harry lived with the Dursleys. They are his Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and his cousin Dudley. Since his parents were killed when he was just a year old, this is the only life he remembers. His life here is unpleasant and he had lost any home that his situation would ever change. When a giant named Hagrid finds him and tells him he is a wizard, Harry is soon very trusting of him and curious about what this new world has to offer him. A good example of this is when the van of a fellow student skids on the ice straight for her. It happens so fast that if Edward wasn’t there to intervene, she would have been hit and killed or severely injured, but with his strength and speed he acquired after becoming a vampire, he could save her. Bella’s life seems better when she is involved in the vampire world and with Edward. This is what makes that world more attractive to her and creates an escape from her old life where these benefits were not
