Victor creates man through unconventional means just like Prometheus, but does not continue to care for his man like Prometheus does. Either way, both are punished for breaking the laws of nature by isolation: Prometheus by Zeus tying to a rock and Victor by the monster killing all of his loved ones. Similarly, they are both denied fire as well but gain access to it. The monster is denied because he isn’t taught what it is, and soon “found, with pleasure, that the fire gave light as well as heat; and that the discovery of this element was useful to [him] and [his] food; for [he] found some of the offals that the travelers had left had been roasted, and tasted much more savory than the berries [he] gathered from the trees” (92.) By knowing the myth of Prometheus, it allows me appreciate the work more because I can see the similarities in Victor and Prometheus as well as the differences. I think the differences are even more important as it shows more deeply that the monster is, in fact, a monster. Without this distinction, it is easy to feel pity for the monster as his struggles are very common and saddening.
