Harvey Parson War
For my Parson’s Challenge, I chose to further develop the theme of my painting, War. Originally, it had been a singular exploration of color and texture, centered around the negative feelings associated with the color red. My new piece, Confusion, focuses on the unfavorable connotations that the color yellow possesses. The goal of this collection was to capture the instinctual impressions behind the colors, through brush technique painting style, without stating it outright. I felt the best way to do this would be through an abstract composition. While I do believe in comprehensive planning and sketching, with these pieces, I found that the most interesting elements came as “happy accidents”. I began each oil painting with a general idea of the techniques and composition I would employ, but the artwork would manifest as …show more content…
My preliminary plan was simply to build up the colors to a deep, crimson hue, and let that be the focal point of the piece, but it became increasingly difficult to produce a concentrated color that would have the necessary consistency. The paint would fly off in chunks rather than a spatter. The “happy accident” came when I attempted to scrape off these dried chunks, and discovered the resulting resemblance to bullet holes. It was unintentional, but now prevails as the focal point of the piece. Portraying the connotations of the color red is painless, blood, war, anger, etc., but I wanted to challenge myself for this second piece. I chose the color yellow because it is predominantly positive. It represents youth, joy, and sunshine, yet until recently I have always viewed it rather negatively. The right hue almost evokes a sense of nausea, and so I used this feeling as the concentration of the

My first portrait I am going to going to critique is a oil on canvas piece by Scott Jones B. This first portrait I am going to critique is called going on four. The first thing you immediately see about the piece is the scantily clad cartoonish bee looking character set in the foreground .The piece is of a bee looking character set in the middle of the piece and taking up about one fourth the piece. He is set in the foreground and almost seems to be coming off the piece or coming out of the painting .The character is wearing a striped shirt with the colors mixed between shades of blue and darker and lighter shades of green. Actually as I look closer at the piece I can see that both the blue and green colors are mixed together to give of tints of colors similar but not the same as the blue and green. The head of the main character is shaped like a round balloon or puffed up balloon and has two sloppy kind of scratched in eyes that are black. The mouth is up in a smile done what I call cartoon style. The rest of the head is colors of bash with red cheeks and no real definitive features besides the before mentioned two eyes and mouth. Then there is the characters hair which is crazily scattered all over the place and scantily clad over his near bald head. Although the hair that is there is jet black and is very long and twisty. After the head and clothes the next thing you notice is the arms and legs of the character which are very awkwardly placed and shaped on the character. For starters the arms are as thin as a rail along with the legs and the hands are shaped like a catcher’s mitt of a baseball player. They the hands are circle shaped and have short stubby fat fingers coming off the end. Then comes the funny part the artist put six fingers on the character on each hand. This makes this piece unique and creative. The…

The main colours in the visual are orange, red, and black. These colours suggest emotions and mystery. The colour red suggests anger and rage, which is possibly felt by the main character at one point in the novel, and the colour black can create a sense of mystery. By just the colours, we can know that there is going to be mystery, anger and rage revealed in the novel. The distinction between the light and the dark gives a sense of mystery and foreboding.…

The Red Tree depicts a young girl moving about her days almost consumed by depression and sadness. However Tan indicates that even when things seem overwhelming there is hope for a better day. In illustration ___ we see the salient image of a young girl trapped in a bottle by her oversized diving helmet. Her posture clearly indicates that she is unhappy and the bottle is slowly filling with water. There is no chance of escape as her oversized helmet clearly will not fit out the narrow neck of the bottle. Tan’s effective use of dark blue and grey further conveys the sombre mood and difficulty the young girl is facing. Through effective use of vector lines the viewer’s eyes are drawn along the horizon to contrasting white clouds, symbolising perhaps that there is hope on the horizon. Tan further emphasizes the sadness consuming the protagonist in illustration __. The salient image of a gigantic fish hangs over the young girl walking alone along a city street. The fish’ gaping mouth creates a vector line to the young girl who is hunched over and clearly unhappy, as she remains in the shadow of the fish while everyone else goes about their business ignoring her. Again, Tan’s…

Another one of my favourite pieces is ‘Girl with ribbon’ I find it portrays a strong sense of emotion to viewers, like many of his other pieces it only tells a snippet of the story and the rest is left to the viewers imagination. This is the aspect that I love the most, each of his pictures are overly dramatic with sometimes a speech bubble to give you an idea of the story behind the painting, it really makes the viewer think about the piece and let their imagination run wild and decipher meanings for themselves. This is what I am planning on achieving through my…

I love art that has a realistic but simplistic style. In “Basket Ferry” you can understand what is going on in the picture and it is very beautiful. However, the artist does not go in-depth with designing specific features of the picture. This gives it a very calm and simplistic style, which I tend to like very much. I find art like “The Birth of Venus” (Page 6) to be very off-putting.…

However, my overall favorite, and in my opinion my most successful work is my spill drawing. Throughout the process of creating my piece, I focused on the realistic properties of my piece as well as the overall effect of the piece as a whole. While drawing, I paid attention to all the details. I kept a picture of a real eye close by, which I referenced multiple times and was therefore able to create a more realistic looking piece. In order to create a realistic looking piece, I had to focus on many different techniques while drawing. By using a picture as a reference, I was able to better recreate the values and details, and therefore creating a realistic drawing. For example, I paid close attention to the value and shading around the eye itself. Along with paying attention to value and details, my technique also significantly impacted how I went about drawing. For me, as well as most artists, the use of blank space is just as important as the penciled in part. For instance, I erased part of the iris of the eye in order to create a reflection, which in turn made it look more realistic. Overall, my spill drawing is my favorite and most successful work that I have created over this past semester. By focusing on value, shading, and precise details I was able to create a realistic drawing that I am proud to call my…

    WW1 Propaganda Report

In my propaganda piece, I have used a small variety of colours to intensify, darken and exaggerate certain elements. If I was wanting to enlist the first thing I would see is the man in the armchair, I have used dull but also light shades to emphasise that he is happy and in a calm place like it was before the war, also taking up all of the foreground. In the background, you can see a line of soldiers in the trenches followed with a big British flag on the right. The colours I have used based around the soldiers are cargo green, black and brown, I chose to use these colours because they don't really stand out, they blend with each other making it look dull. In saying that I have used lively and intense red and blues to make the flag pop. I added a lot of black in the corner…

“What in the world is that supposed to be?” This is what I find to be my reaction when I look at Salvador Dali’s paintings. Perhaps you’ve thought the same way about other artist’s paintings, perhaps Picasso. The interesting things about Dali’s paintings are that most of them have more than one meaning and every time you look at the painting you notice something different. For this paper we will go on a journey and try to figure out what Dali was thinking while painting, The Hallucinogenic Toreador.…

World War I is one of the bloodiest wars of all time and many new forms of technology had formed meaning that there would be a lot of change. As humans, a majority are afraid of change which had increased the anxiety of the people during this time. An example of one of these artworks that depict anxiety is “The Flame” by Jackson Pollock. This painting was drawn in 1938 (around 20 years after WWI) and is an abstract painting that depicts a flame to represent an idea of the somewhat recent war. The painting contains many streaks of red, black, and white. These colors symbolize many different feelings but when these colors are joined together in this painting, it is clear that the painter is demonstrating to the…

As time wears on, art created by the human hand grows more and more complex to encapsulate abstract ideas and emotions. Since stiff portraits became fleeting moments captured in impressionism, which then developed into expressionism... It almost seems as if artists are beholding more and more perplexing emotions. The truth is rather contrary; the latest trends in styles of artistry do not inhibit "proper" expression of emotions, but rather, they act as vastly different vessels of expression. Almost like those flavored milk straws, whether the milk tastes like strawberries or chocolate it is essentially still milk; milk being the passions expressed and flavor the movement.…

From realism, to abstraction and from sculptures to literature, it is all art. Some say that we have our various forms of art because our brains are large and need stimulation. Our curiosity and our constant communication need a release, and in many cases this release takes its form through the different mediums of art. Art allows us to demonstrate whatever it is we please, and to express what our heart desires. Unfortunately, we don’t have every artist’s interpretation of their work, our job is to look for what message the creator and patron of the work was sending and why.…

In Vir Heroicus Sublimis, the oil painting is a flat rich red canvas with approximately 5 different colored lines running vertically down the painting. The colors seem to be that of a particular white, blue and possibly a creamy color. Due to my inability to see the actual piece in real life I am unable to specify what the colors may truly be. I cannot say I dislike the painting, but can say I am indifferent about it and its perception of art. In my…

Symbolism is used to portray the harsh reality of colonization. In Meditation on Yellow "yellow" is symbolic of the innocence of the Amerindians and the purity in their mind and soul upon encountering the Whites. This is noted in the phrase " but we were peaceful then child-like in the yellow dawn of our innocence." The fact that these Amerindians had no idea of what was to come their way and that they offered the best of what they had to the Europeans makes this encounter even more sad and advantageous. Furthermore, yellow is symbolic of sickness and infection. This is reflect in the minds of the Europeans as it was infected with the yearning for wealth and power. Due to this "infection" the Amerindian we turned into slaves, the land was exploited and the Europeans began colonization. The use of symbolism conveys the extremes which these two set of people existed, the Amerindian being kind and pure and the Europeans being cold-hearted and greedy.…
