Has High School Changed You
Has High School Changed you?

The future is unpredictable, and with it come more and more responsibilities. Are you the same person you were before? Or have these actions and responsibilities molded you to become the person you are today? Is the same person that started high school four years ago standing where you are, or is that person long gone? For me, the transition through high school has changed me thoroughly. I’ve noticed that high school has made me sharper about whom to trust and I judge people more than I used to. High school gives you more options, viewpoints, and ideas. You will change a lot through high school. You’ll mature in almost every way, you will learn more about yourself, who you are and what you believe in. you will go through hard times but eventually get through them. When I started out at the freshman center I knew that I wanted to be a professional football player, but now I’m not so sure what I want to be. A couple of major events that occurred through my high school career have changed my mind on things. Injuries can play a big part of your life and make you more cautious to your surroundings. My eighth grade year in football came to an end the day before our first football game. I was starting receiver and proud of it. We were just going over end zone plays to get a little sharper before the game. I had a little slant route and I caught the ball with ease untouched. The coach blew the whistle and I relaxed. I took one step back to give the ball to the coach when I was blindsided. I took a step to the side and the weight of both of us snapped my knee and brought it to a weird angle. The coaches rushed over and carried me off then called my step dad who picked me up and we went to the hospital. I had blown out my knee all before high school too. I was too young to get surgery so I just went to rehab for a couple months. When I started out my freshman year I was in football again and eager to get back on the field.

Last OP I talked about concussions and the effect they have on people’s brains. Other injuries can affect the way a certain muscle can work. When you break a bone in your leg or tear something you need to do physical therapy. While you do physical therapy it can take a long time to build up the muscle you didn’t use. This is not good, if you keep playing sports that muscle will be stronger, but the downside is that the ligament may be more prone to being injured. Many players come back from a serious injury and then do very well. One instance was when Peyton Manning came back from neck surgery to set many records in the next season. This year Peyton Manning is sorely underperforming and was injured and isn’t doing well. There have been stories where he has immense…

Although I have had many injuries growing up, there is one that particularly changed my life for the better. The injury occurred when I was playing eighth grade football. It was August and we were scrimmaging Westfield; a very good team that had a lot of big players. The coach called me onto the field to play fullback, which means that I was probably going to carry the football. As I was running onto the field my heart started to beat a little faster. I had a bad feeling about getting the ball. I thought that I was going to get hurt because on the play prior the fullback ahead of me injured his knee on a run. Everything went well for the first few plays, but on the fifth play the coach called a fullback run. My heart was racing, at the snap of the ball I ran ahead for about an eight yard gain, but on the way down I felt a horrible pain in my right foot. I ended up going to the hospital a half an hour later, the doctor said that I had multiple fractures (6 to be exact), possibly some torn ligaments, and a dislocation of a few bones. I really did a number on myself. The doctor claimed to me that I would be out for at least 6 weeks, which is over halfway through the regular season. The doctor also highly recommended that I go see a sports injury specialist, or a foot specialist.…

I see high school as deeper work, more responsibility, and more homework. The teachers are a lot harder on you. In high school, you get more freedom than in middle school because you’re older. There is harder work because the standards are higher. There is more responsibility because the teachers think you can do it and you have to keep up with more books and stuff.…

Starting high school was a terrifying idea to me. Different teachers, class times, lockers, drama! I remember that I always looked up to my older sister while she was in high school. She had tons of friends, played sports, participated in student government, and went out for the school play. I wanted to be just like her when I started high school. In middle school, I lined myself up for this, I played soccer in the fall and basketball in the winter. I helped out in the school plays, and I joined the student government. I had a group of great friends, and thought nothing bad was going to happen.…

I knew something was serious and my parents came and drove me to the hospital. At the hospital they told me my appendix was about to burst and I would have to have emergency surgery. For the next 6 weeks I was mandated to sit out as I watched my senior season slip through my fingertips. I sat at home for the first week and reflected on how my attitude should be when I come back. I came to the conclusion I was still the leader of the team and even if I wasn’t able to play, I could still lead the team and show my commitment through continuous support. It was not easy. Watching your whole school cheer on everyone else, knowing you are the game changer sitting on the sideline because of a fluke body reaction. Through all of this I learned to fight through hard times and be positive and work hard because when I was able to return, I was more than ready. In the final game I played and my first game back, I rushed for 197 yards, two touchdowns, and led the defense in tackles. I can truly say I have never been more proud of myself and not only was it because I worked hard to recover from my injury, but because I showed my teammates that I would not give up and I would stick by them and do everything possible. It was a bittersweet feeling to leave the field for my last high school football game, but it was definitely more sweet than…

High school is a different experience for everyone. The first three years really blend together and do not seem important, but senior year is completely different. Freshman year was full of confusion, learning an array of new things. Sophomore year was where life started to get fun and you “belonged” in the high school. Junior year was where you see the little light at the end of the tunnel, but it was filled with anxiety and frustration. Senior year is where it all becomes worth it and the rest of your life is finally going to begin.…

There is an enormous difference between myself as a high school student and now as a “seasoned veteran” college student. Looking back, I can see just how much I have matured. I remember vividly my first day of high school. There I was, freshman year, whimpering as my mother handed me my sack lunch and pinched a small ball of fuzz off of my freshly pleated khakis. She gave me a kiss and fixed my tie as my father pulled the car out of the garage. He drove me to school that day. What an awkward car ride. He gave the whole spiel about how I was a young man now, and I had to make adult decisions. He talked about choosing the right friends, not doing drugs, and all that other good pep-talky stuff. I knew he was right, but I didn’t want to grow up just yet. I mean, the hardest decision I had to make in high school was what I should do on a Friday night. I never really had to grow up. I was very nurtured by my parents and thus sheltered from the world. I was naïve and conservative. My years throughout high school shaped me into a more liberal and open-minded person aware of things around me. College has changed me even greater.…

Each year I periodically got better and better. My 8th grade year was one of my toughest years of playing football. I didn’t really get to start that much during the season. By mid-season I broke my wrist. During a play I was pushed in the back, and I stuck my hand out to help myself stay up, and my wrist snapped in two places. At first I didn’t feel it, and I thought it was just swollen. I believed I could just shake it off till I went to the sideline to have the coach check it out. He told me that it was broken, and that was when all the pain started. But through it all I managed to stay calm and keep a straight face. That ended my 8th grade year, which was terrible. After recovering I was scared to actually hit someone, so my first two years of high school I didn’t play the way I used to play. My junior and senior year were the best I have played football. Those were the years I started hitting the weights hard, thanks to my dad.…
