feet down the ledge hitting some trees and stumps on the way down. The next thing I remember was waking up with people all around me and since I was the main medical person there I had to basically treat myself, even with the severe back pain I had received Since we were out training in the middle of nowhere it took around 3 hours to finally get somewhere a helicopter could land to come get me and take me to Tripler Army Medical Center.
Once I had arrived at Tripler Army Medical Center I was taken straight to the emergency room from the roof because I had arrived by helicopter.
After that I was seen by a doctor who did not say much but then shortly left to get someone to take me to go get x-rays. Once I had gotten my x-rays done the doctor had come back and told me that I had broken my back in three separate places and that I was going to have surgery later that day to try and fix the breaks. After the surgery that took quite a few hours, I was still to be stuck in the hospital for around two weeks until finally I was released, but there was still much pain and many problems to deal with concerning my back.
Even today which is around three years ago I am still having to deal with problems relating to when I injured my back. I still have to go to the VA on a regular basis to be seen by a doctor who specializes in back injuries to try to correct the problem that is still there. I have even been told that I will most likely have to go and have more surgery to try and fix the injuries again. The pain is something I have to deal with almost daily and is still being treated almost three years after I fell and injured my
back.
The injury to my back is what eventually led me to get out of the Army. I had initially planned on staying in the Army for a long time. Things may not have gone as planned but they have turned out for the better because now I am able to attend college full time and get my degree. In conclusion, this life changing experience of my injury has had its many downs but in the end is turning out to be a good thing. This injury has also led me to be the person I am today and made me a better and more resilient person in the process.
