Hawai I: Cessation Case Study

In Hawai’i, increased tobacco regulation and education campaigns have produced a greater awareness of the health consequences of tobacco use. This knowledge has influenced more smokers to quit. However, with withdrawal symptoms obstructing the smoker’s progress, the demand for cessation assistance has increased. Therefore, it is essential that existing cessation programs provide quality services and support to assist smokers in achieving a smoke-free lifestyle. However, with limited funding and resources, the success of a program ultimately depends on the organization’s ability to effectively manage resources to achieve their goal. This project aims to highlight the importance of management in successfully promoting smoking cessation. The student will analyze the various components necessary for the development and continuation of a cessation program and how these factors affect the participant’s ability to quit.
The student will work in collaboration with the American Lung Association (ALA), under the supervision of the executive director, Kim Nguyen. The ALA is one of the leading organizations focused on saving lives through the improvement of lung health and preventing lung diseases
This will specify what the ALA believes is necessary for their cessation programming. Based on the distribution of funds, the student can determine the priority the ALA places on each item and analyze how those funds affect the services provided. Additionally, the student will 2) attend the freedom from smoking workshops and assist the educators in their lesson planning. This will allow the student to experience the workshop from both the participant and management perspective. Lastly, the student will 3) assist Kim Nguyen with the planning of the Lung Force Walk to gain experience in coordinating large scale community
