Haywards In The Haywood Fayn
‘How does Frayn present the Haywards as an interesting mix?’

The Haywards are presented as an impeccable family, with good taste and meticulous manners, but each of the Haywards have varying qualities that make them a mix which is interesting when compared to others such as the Wheatley family, who are also featured on the story.

Keith Hayward - the son of Mr and Mrs Hayward - is a young boy who craves authority and who is presented as a bossy and overpowering character, which is emphasised by the quotation, ‘We had a great many enterprises and projects, and in all of them he was the leader and i was the lead.’ This establishes how he manipulates things to become the leader but this is because of his ‘ intellectual and imaginative superiority.’

The first section of the quote - ‘It was Keith, not me…’ could refer to how controlling and overbearing Keith is to Steven and why is a boy so rich and smart being close friends with a boy moderately poor and moderately clever. Possibly, this could be referred back to how Keith craves power and authority so therefore by being friends with a lower class child, he could get the attention he so desperately needs, however could this reflect on the Mr Haywards …show more content…
This leads on to the final piece of the Haywards, Mr Hayward an old fashion man with tradition values. He calls Keith ‘old boy’, ‘old chap’ and ‘old bean’ which goes with with this era. Furthermore, this could seem snobby or that he was brought up in a posh environment and well spoken parents. Additionally, he appears to be a perfectionist as a consequent of this quotation, ‘…for ever making perfection more perfect’ but this is common with the Hayward family, never less this might be due to the father as he is in charge as seen with the paragraph before.

He is illustrated as an introvert, a man who was deeply consumed in his work, this is emphasised the the extract on page 22, ‘Keith’s father worked and worked’ this indicates that he has no real connection with his son and wife due to his heavy work schedule. ‘…Keith who’d get caned, because Stephen didn't even exist.’ This hints that he is an alarming character and that he is very judgmental as he treats Stephen like he doesn't exist, maybe because of their such different

Carol’s family of origin had all of the exterior appearances of the “perfect” family. Her father was a coal miner and had very little time to spend with the children. What interaction he did have was more with the boys than the two girls often saying that their mother was better at teaching them the work of a woman. Carol’s mother tried but with her time was most often spent with the Church and Church organizations. From all outside appearances they were the perfect…

The transition from the carefree teenage years to the realities of adult life brings to the surface the flaws of enmity and jealousy present in every person. Gene considers: “To keep silent about this amazing happening deepened the shock for me. It made Finny seem too unusual for -- not friendship, but too unusual for rivalry. And there were few relationships among us at Devon not based on rivalry” (45). This is the starting point where Gene starts to view Finny’s actions in a different way, not as a challenge or a competition, but as a part of Finny’s personality. This causes Gene to change his attitude and see his friend in a different…

Mike Scanlon, on the other hand, could never be described as shy. He was the student that teachers dreaded having in their classroom: boisterous, unruly, and indifferent to authority. Mike had many brushes with the law throughout his high school years, for crimes ranging from vandalism to public drunkenness. Mike dropped out of high school to take a job as an oil-change technician at a local garage; he spends most of free time and money at local bars- at least the ones that haven't banned him for starting fights. Mike's current legal trouble surrounds two of his ex-girlfriends, who are independently taking him to court for child support. Mike is unfazed, however; he laughs with his friends that they'll never get a dime from him.…

Appears to be the first sign that Chris is unaffected by the words of others whether by ignoring them, getting lost in his fantasies, or the least likely- being mentally handicapped (bipolar?), delusional? It is also said a few lines down that “[Chris] simply appeared to be absent.” which also aids the fact that Chris is doing something in his mind to avoid the words. Could almost foreshadow how Chris doesn’t deal with reality, how he just lives in his fantasies instead of facing facts. Interesting to note the “old rage of helplessness” possibly referring to a feeling she is very used the feeling; it could be that she herself has been faced with this situation. The words used in the passage suggest great strength of character from Chris. Grandfather Connor was talking to Chris but Chris seems unfazed by it and even…

Writing from The Listener, Simon Raven even went as far to dismiss Bond as an "infantile" creation. Seeing as he has the emotional and mental capacity of a teenage boy, this description seems accurate, bearing in mind his ignorant philosophies such as leaving ‘the men’s work to the men’.…

Jane Epstein is beginning to settle down in her new work organisation named TechniCo. It is evident from the text that she has a considerably good team to work with, with an assortment of attitudes and skills. She provides an overview of her team members to her ex colleague Rick Lazarus and describes Caroline as having a huge social capital and the one who is the “agony aunt” to one and all in the organisation. Tom is a natural sales guy whereas Jack is an intellectual but somehow a shy personality. Andy Zimmerman, however, is an aggressive, bully and an ill tempered employee. He clearly lacks the qualities which a team player ought to have in today’s organisations. He does not honour others’ ideas as well as he does not take into account the margins of human errors that may occur occasionally. Nevertheless, he is smart, efficient and a stellar performer of the organisation who is ideally indispensible to the team.…
