Many people might think there is more good than bad with the potential risk of being hazed. Hazing is within many organizations and clubs it is not just Greek life. However, hazing does vary within the types of organizations but the most common hazing activities are sleep deprivation, drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, forcing embarrassing behavior, verbal and physical abuse, and there is much more. These are the types of thing that could affect student negatively and it is important to know the possible negative effects. Research has shown that hazed has change people's opinions about Greek life and it has also affected new member to the organization physically and emotionally. In a survey called Attitudes about Fraternities and Sororities developed by Cokley et al. (2001) students were asked about their perceptive about the purpose of pledging, the impact of pledging, conformity to pledging, rules, perceptions of Greek organizations, moral concerns, and beliefs about pledging difficulty. The results showed that more women than men wish that pledging should be more of a positive experience then anything. For example, students were given certain standard that they are expected to live up to by the other so they feel better about themselves. The level of self-esteem impacted student misuse of alcohol, prejudices etc. Individuals who possess high levels of self-esteem have a lower alcohol intake and experience fewer negative consequences than those with low self-esteem who relied on living up to certain standards in order to feel good about themselves. While individuals who have lower self-esteem tend to be more injustice, for example in terms of failure feedback and belittlement of members of out-groups. These studies suggest that hazing affects student self-esteem and there are huge differences between members apart of Greek societies.
Altogether, there are 800 campuses that take part in Geek life between Canada and the United States. People have began to take notice in rituals of hazing in fraternities and sororities and they see a problem. Hazing has hurt many individuals, physically and emotionally.
