Frat Boys Research Paper
One in every four women is sexually assaulted before they leave their campuses at the end of their college education. With this in mind, woman involved in sororities have a 74 percent higher potential to be assaulted, and men included in fraternities have a 300 percent larger possibility to commit a sexual assault (Earp). This alarming statistic should bring question to universities around the world, but the truth is that claims against sexual assault are one of the most difficult felonies to prove. Due to all the money involved in college educations, universities have turned into big corporations only concerned with how they look on paper and in return, rape and sexual assault allegations are swept under the rug. Because of this issue, …show more content…
The term frat boy is associated with dozens of negative synonyms. They are categorized as boisterous, foolish, and immature. None of the terms identified with men are personality traits of fraternity members. It is commonly known that those who are inexperienced with the world, or are too insecure tend to gravitate towards each other in order to fit in and feel normal. With this psychological burden, fraternities are born. Those who claim themselves as leaders have a dominance over the newcomers affecting the excessive peer pressure found in these types of organizations. Once welcomed into the fraternity, the heavy episodic drinking, smoking, and partying begins, and once these inhibitors are introduced, the chain reaction of events leads to sexual assault. At least one-half of all sexual assaults or violent crimes involve the perpetrator drinking, or both the victim and perpetrator having alcohol in their system (Alcohol). This can be translated to prove that drinking increases the possibility of a sexual assault by 50 percent, and at parties where all people are dinking, the risk increases even further, and substances like marijuana, farther yet. There is a definite correlation between alcohol abuse and sexual violence. Not only can peer pressure be a factor, but also the psychological side of how frat boys are

Binge drinking is a reality of college life in America and perhaps the central focus fraternity life. In Henry Wechsler’s article entitled, “Binge Drinking Must Be Stopped” Wechsler discusses that freshman’s learn during the first week of school where the alcohol and parties are and often has a binge drinking experience even before purchasing a text book. The argument is that freshman’s know where to get alcohol at their first week of school, so they often come back for more and become abuse of alcohol. Wechsler argues that Universities and Colleges presidents should take care of abuse drinking. Wechsler present very little of the opposing side.…

The Hunting ground was a great documentary on sexual assaults that go on on college campuses. The Hunting Ground shows us various students who where sexually assaulted at their local college campuses. After watching the movie, I gain a lot of knowledge on what really goes on behind some college campuses and how some college administrators use their authority to keep sexual assaults from the public eye . The Hunting Ground provides us with multiple students who allege that they were sexually assaulted at their local college campuses, and that the college deans ignored them or required them to provide evidence. The film provides us with evidence that many college officials in charge were more concerned with…

Every black fraternity party has very loud music throughout the night, it is very difficult to interacts with individuals verbally at their parties. This characterizes their party as high risk because the loud music limits men and women to engage in friendly conversations. Boswell and Spade characterize this to be a high risk factor, because it implies the men are only there to dance and hook up with the women. Furthermore, the men at the parties are very aggressive when it comes to dancing. If a man wants to dance with a woman, he either comes behind her and starts dancing or he grabs her by the arm and pulls her towards him.…

In four short years, Missoula, a college town in the state of Montana, experienced a leap in the number of campus rapes and sexual assaults reported to the police. Very few victims and accusers were taken seriously by the local police department or the university. The prevalence of this epidemic is appalling and apparent in not only college towns, but the entire country. The only way to curb this problem is to bring light to the issue. By requiring college students to read and discuss Missoula in school, students and teachers will be more inclined to come forward and report their abuse while simultaneously giving other victims a voice. Meanwhile, people that have raped or will rape in the future will become aware of their actions and the punishment.…

This ideal provides all Americans with the comfort that they will not be thrown in prison for a crime they did not commit. Essentially, to rule any conviction, the court must prove the suspect guilty beyond any reasonable doubt. This should also help to protect every individual from consequences based on false allegations. However, this principle is only extensively practiced in our judicial system. On college campuses across the U.S. sexual assault runs rampant. Due to this unfortunate truth, a clause was written into Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 that sets the standard of proof for such cases to be “preponderance of evidence”, rather than “beyond a reasonable doubt”. If “preponderance of evidence” is not a high enough standard for our judicial system, then it should not be an acceptable standard for cases of criminal nature within our schools; Furthermore, it leaves open countless possibilities for defamation of innocent parties and internal system…

    Date Rape Play Analysis

According to Rape Abuse and Incest National Network, approximately four out of five rapes are committed by someone known to the victim. The One in Four organization states that “In one year 300,000 college women, over 5% of women enrolled in colleges and universities, experience rape. This does not include other forms of sexual assault” (Kilpatrick, et al.) The brutality of this data stuns me. This is also the reason I take great pride in my writing a one act play about date rape. I wanted to be a part of raising awareness and providing hope and healing to my fellow students as well as members of the community. Unfortunately, I have found that this is a difficult topic for many and not readily discussed by students on college campuses, so I tackled the research and emotional toil needed to write a story about a college student who had been raped.…

College campuses are supposed to be a place of safe education and self-discovery, but recently sexual assaults and violence have been pushed to the forefront of the national discussion. While colleges have always had sexual assaults, only in 1991 was the first sexual consent policy with affirmative consent put into action. It was met with pushback, with many thinking it was overkill and really served no purpose. Only later would we learn how badly it was needed and how it was even used a model for the California consent laws.…

Sexual assault is very common. For a bad act as this, it is surprising how frequently assault occurs. Sexual assault is the most pressing issue faced by a younger generation that is not being addressed adequately, and while plenty of research is being done, not so much action is being taken. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) “National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS), nearly 1 in 5 women and 1 in 71 men in the United States have been raped at some time in their lives, and nearly 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men have experienced other forms of sexual violence victimization in their lifetime" (CDC). The problem of sexual assault is terrifying because rather than declining, it has become rampant. However, if people are taught about how horrific sexual assault is at a young and impressionable age, the high rates of sexual assault would decrease significantly. When the Association of American Universities conducted research on sexual assault in universities, the results were shocking. 11% of female…

Colleges need to provide self defense classes and education of how to keep safe with environments faced on campus so students are prepared if faced with an attack. Knowing not all sexual assault can be stopped, universities need to have an action plan for students who have found their selves victimized by sexual assault. Professional counselors need to be readily available to students who have experienced trauma within school grounds. In addition, college administration should have to report any and all sexual assault cases brought to them by students, this could help lower the amount of cases in the future for fear of…

Moving on, I think that it is great that we have Title IX. Title IX bans sex discrimination in any federally funded education program and it gives equal access to higher education. Sexual misconduct is taken more serious now and it helps victims of rape. This title also helps college boys understand that women have the same equal opportunity as they do. When students learn about the consequences they can face when they break rules the issue is taken serious by them and I think Title IX does a great job in communicating that message to college-aged audiences. Another possible way that the message can be communicated is colleges can have mandated education classes that students have to take during their first year of college to help better understand the issue and the consequences. The course should include teaching student’s morals of relationships, alcohol's effect on behavior, negative gender stereotypes to what constitutes sexual assault, and what consent is and what it’s not. Also in the course students should be taught the difference bystanders can make. Having a program like that can make drastic changes in my opinion and it should be taken into inconsideration since it seems to fit our time…
