Go to www.medicare.gov and find the Nursing Home compare section.
Search for a nursing home of your choosing (maybe one from your home town). Choose 3 strengths and 3 weaknesses and describe why you chose each quality indicator. Please ensure that these weaknesses and strengths are measurable metrics.
The intention of this exercise is to become familiar with comparing nursing homes for quality measures. This exercise is worth 10 points.
Retirement may be a long way off, but it’s closer than you think! Answer the following questions:
a. Where will you live? Will you be joining a retirement community, or will you be retiring elsewhere? In two to three paragraphs, tell me where you plan on retiring and what type of home you will live in and why.
b. How much money will you need in order to retire in the manner in which you would like? Use an online retirement calculator to figure how much you will need to save by the time you reach the retirement age of 67 years old. Since social security may not be around in 30 to 40 years, do not factor social security income into your calculations.

How do you plan on financing your health care needs when you retire. Typically, we don’t think about how we plan on paying for health care. You will probably have Medicare, however, there are many gaps in what is covered. And if you need LTC, you will find that Medicare will probably not be the primary payer. What options should you consider when you address this concern. The intention of this exercise is have you think about your retirement planning. Now is the time to begin to consider your options and begin to plan accordingly.

You have decided to open up an Elder Care Resource Center. You will provide case management services for older individuals who need assistance and usually don’t have assistance available. Describe 5 services that you would develop to meet these client’s needs. Remember your customers will probably be older individuals and their families. This exercise is worth 10 points.
You have been very interested in creating a consulting company and have an interest in measuring quality of long term care facilities. Facilities would hire you to analyze and report out on the quality of care provided. Develop a checklist of quality indicators for a long term care facility. Please be aware that these quality indicators must be measurable and typically have a targeted standard associated with each one. In other words, indicators can measure quality by exceeding the standard (targeted quality expectation), meeting the standard, or not meeting the standard. Develop a these standards in this fashion. Each indicator will have meets quality measure, naturally with an exceeds standard and not meets standard. I will discuss this further in class.
