This summary is written to identify some of the tools for motivating and empowering staff. In the past, the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) provided each staff member hired with a job description of performance expectations for this hired position only, nothing more and nothing less. Today healthcare organizations are realizing that the driving force for success and achievement of outcomes depends a great deal on staff accountability. VAMC did not communicate well or often enough with the staff or veterans and did not ask enough questions, or did not make a conscious effort to listen and really hear the staff or veterans. The federal government was still applying the old ways that caused veterans to distrust the system and complain. This system was not working. Staff motivation and empowerment is definitely needed at the VAMC.
