Marijuana is a stimulant which creates an illusion of reduced pain, but contains many toxic chemicals which can cause bad side effects such as depression, addiction, and reduction in human cognitive ability. Marijuana contains a chemical called tetrahydrocannabinol, which is THC. When a patient consumes marijuana, THC is released in the brain which causes the neurotransmitter dopamine to release. Dopamine brings feelings of euphoria to the person and can become very addictive. If a patient is strongly addicted to marijuana, there is high a chance that they will find other stronger stimulants such as heroin and cocaine. Marijuana can then serve as a gateway drug to other harmful substances. THC is not only addictive but it also alters human memory and reduces their intelligence. "Researchers found that compared to nonusers, people who smoked marijuana have less brain volume, or gray matter, in the orbitofrontal cortex. That's the area in the front of your brain that helps you make decisions." (Francesca Fibey). Marijuana also should not be used in medical treatment because marijuana not only causes mental health risks, but it also causes physical health risks. It causes human illness and suffering from the toxic chemicals. Some people say marijuana can help treat human cancers and some types of pain, but these treatments are not enough.
