There are many possible reasons for the change in the age pyramids. One reason could have to do with the widening of the pyramid at almost every age particularly the older ages is better nutrition and medical advancements. Things like nutritional advancements and support allowed and still allows individuals to maintain their health. Medical advancements have helped treat medical conditions or injuries. This allowed individuals who would not have survived in the past the opportunity to recover and continue a productive life. Medical advances also help keep infants alive which has been part of the reason for the widening of the bottom of the pyramids in recent years.…
The average life expectancy has increased over the last century; the average life expectancy for women is 80 years while men are expected to live to about 75 years old. The population of older adults over the age of 65 years is expected to increase from 35 million in 2000 to 70 million by the year 2030. Aging is a slow decline in the ability of an organism to resist stress, damage, and disease. As the human body ages there are physical and biological changes that occur as well. The lifestyles that we chose to live have a large impact positively and negatively in the way we age. Every aspect of the body changes, from the skeletal system to the muscular to the cardiopulmonary system, even down the integumentary system.…
The article “Old Age as a Time of New Opportunities (from the Foundation of Age)” by Betty Friedan opened my eyes to a perspective that I had never really thought about. It was about how old age is usually perceived as another step closer to death. In this article we are able to understand the perspective of an elder female. The female is 59 years old almost 60. She wants to go to Outward Bound which will give her the extreme outdoor experience. She goes with her friend Cecelia Herwich. They have to leave their city clothes and forget about who they were in the past and have to leave behind their professional role. When they arrive at the first campsite they are given…
The system of government when states and provinces share power with a national government is called federalism. Federalism makes two close levels of government, both have the ability to act immediately on behalf of the people. It can be bad for our country or state, but can also be good in many other ways. One pro of federalism is states have control of their own policies. For example, Texas has the policy of the death penalty, and other states up north do not have this policy into effect.…
The Gilded Age, the period from 1870 to around 1900, got its name from Mark Twain, who thought the era was glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath (Mintz, McNeil). When most people picture the Gilded Age, they refer to Mark Twain's view of an imbalanced, corrupt society. Many think that the Gilded Age was mainly an era full of social inequality, greed, careless captains of industry, unhealthy and immoral lifestyles of the lower class, business scandals, and devious political tactics. Many critics and historians, who haven't set aside time to thoroughly study or take note of most of the beneficial effects of this period, may easily support and claim these beliefs. Although the Gilded Age is frequently viewed as an adverse era of social…

As we grow into middle ages of 35 to 65, we encounter another set of physical changes. These primary changes are wrinkling, hair loss, and hair color to name some examples. Secondary changes are chronic diseases such as cancer development. These normal (primary) changes are inevitable and are built into our systems and are going to happen one way or another as time progresses. Changes due to disease are referred to as impaired aging in addition to secondary aging. These are both a function of an abnormal set of changes afflicting a segment rather than the entirety of the older population, which secondary changes do. (textbook page 6)…

The United States experienced an "explosion" of births after World War II and sociologist refer to this resulting group of people as baby boomers. The first of about 76 million baby boomers recently turned 65 and they are looking forward to a life expectancy that is higher than that of any previous generation. The average life expectancy in the 1900s in our country was only 47 years old? Today it is a whopping 37-year increase to 78, which is the biggest increase in all of recorded history. According to the CDC, people are living to be older than they ever have due to better nutrition and healthcare. Because of this dramatic growth in both the number and percentage of older adults, the CDC has made improving the health status and addressing the health needs of this age group one of its top agency priorities.…

We experience many different changes in our lives during middle adulthood. Starting at around the age of 40, we start to become more likely to experience certain illnesses like arthritis, diabetes, hypertension, and other illnesses. We also begin to be become more concerned about our health during middle adulthood than we were in our younger days. Hypertension is one of the most frequent chronic disorders that we face during this time. Hypertension is often symptomless, which makes it even more deadly because if it is left untreated, it greatly increases the chance of stroke and heart attack. What I found interesting in this chapter is that even though we are faced with these issues, we tend to be relatively healthy during middle adulthood.…
There is no denying that our body starts the process of aging as soon as we are born into this world. Through biological and social level, everyone experienced aging as it was defined to be calculated by the number of years a person has lived (Aldwin).
