1. What is an AED? Where are they found?
AED is an automatic external defibrillator that uses electricity to reestablish a normal heart beat. Commonly found in airports, schools, shopping malls, and among other sites.
2. What is CPR? Why is it used?
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that is used to help preserve brain functioning during a cardiac arrest.
3. What are the three degrees of burns? How is each characterized?
1st degree- skin is red and somewhat swollen
2nd degree burn- skin is red, swollen, and blistered
3rd degree burn- skin appears to be charred or even white. Medical treatment is necessary.
4. What is blood pressure? What are the two types of blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the amount of pressure placed on blood vessel walls by circulating blood. The two types of blood pressure are systolic (max) and diastolic (minimum) blood pressure.
5. What are vital signs? Why are vital signs used?
Vital signs are physiological statistics that are taken to assess and examine basic body functions. Vital signs include heartbeat, blood pressure, and temperature. Critical Thinking Questions
1. Imagine that you are sitting in a restaurant and someone begins to choke. What could you do to help this person?
Call emergency responders and use the Heimlich maneuver to help clear the airway.
2. You are alerted that a person near you is unresponsive and not breathing. What would you do to help this person? The first thing to help the unresponsive person is to call 911. The next plan of action is to perform CPR to help preserve oxygen to the brain. There are multiple steps in performing CPR and professionals would encourage one to become certified.
3. Imagine that you are tasked with taking a person's vital signs. How would you do this? What tools would you use?
