Healthy People 2020 Research Paper
One of the topics and objectives of healthy People 2020 is Diabetes: D-5 Improve glycemic control among persons with diabetes. School nurses play a huge role helping teenage students to control their blood sugar on a daily basis. The nurse monitors if students have appropriate supplies, checks if students withdraw the right amount of insulin. If the nurse notices that student’s blood sugar is constantly high for a period of time, he/she reaches student’s HCP and clarifies if there is a need to change patient’s sliding scale. Another topics and objectives of Healthy People 2020 is Vision: V-2 Reduce blindness and visual impairment in children and adolescents aged 17 years and under. She educates not only school children on healthy diet habits, hand hygiene, or disease management, but also school staff as well. The nurse was educating one of the school teacher on hypertension sign symptoms and necessity taking medication on regular basis to maintain stable blood pressure levels. In addition, the school nurse provides CPR training for school teachers.
Also, the school nurse advocate for students. If the nurse suspects that any of students being neglected or abused, she reports it to the school social worker. For instance, tween sisters came with the complain of stomachache. During the conversation, the nurse found out that their stepmother does not allow them to eat and sometimes sisters can be without food for days. The nurse immediately reported this issue to the social worker.
The school nurse as a health promoter. Despite improvements to the National School Lunch Program, many school students do not eat school lunch. The school nurse helps children make smart choices in the school cafeteria. Many students skip breakfast, which has negative impact on students’ school performance. The school nurse always tries to convince teenagers to eat breakfast every time they come with the
