In this comic, Sacco demonstrates his opinion on the issue of freedom of speech by showing how offensive the material was that Hebdo had published. This was easily…

The U.S. guarantees free speech to its citizens. The protests of the Westboro "church" are, in my opinion, morally reprehensible and cruel. But, once we start denying free speech to somebody, simply because we don't like their opinions, we undermine the rights on which our country is built, and we open the door to censorship.…

In a country with different sects and religious beliefs, any kind of freedom of expression that might insult others, may lead to destabilization as we have witnessed in Paris 2015. Charlie Hebdo, a political French magazine, has caused instability in Paris due to its publishing. It isn’t the first time the magazine insults a part, whether Islam, Catholicism, Judaism, etc. This magazine, which made jokes about Islamic Leaders and Prophet Mohammad, forced two men to attack the offices of Charlie Hebdo, killing 12 people and injuring 11. The protests occurred in many Islamic countries, embassies were attacked and other terrorist attacks were planned. Phrases such as #JeSuisCharlie or #JeSuisMohammad were spread all over the social media which created more frustrations among people. This tragic event that shocked the world, highlighted that the materials safeguarded by librarians hold powerful meanings to people and can move them to violence. Peter Hart, communications director of the National Coalition Against Censorship: “Remember what happened in Paris, we have to be extra careful to not do anything that could provoke that kind of vicious and despicable attack.” Peet, 2015 (p.12). What may be a joke for a party, can be an insult to another, especially religious. That’s why it is important to choose the right phrases and cartoons to publish to avoid…

Charlie Hebdo’s newest illustration of the prophet Muhammad was the main reason why the people attacked Charlie Hebdo. In the past the magazine issued a series where it showed Muhammad being beheaded by a member of the Islamic State. In the midst of the uproar this tragedy has provoked debate around the world about if and when there are limits. Many around the world strongly support the magazine's right to publish the cartoons; however many people also felt that the magazine was over using freedom of speech to attack a specific group of religion. Freedom of speech is a frequently debated issue because it’s hard to choose what can or cannot be expressed. Many included my self believe that we as humans have the right to our own opinion and the means by which to express it. However, there are some supporters that push for restrictions on negative speech, such as violent or racist remarks.
