Helicobacter Pylori Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori), is a spiral shaped bacterium commonly found in the stomach. The shape of the bacteria and the way it moves allows it to penetrate the mucous lining of the stomach. They are very due to the help of their flagella. H. Pylori can also attach itself to stomach cells causing gastritis and stimulating the production of stomach acid. Over time inflammation can lead to stomach cancer (WebMd, 2013). H. Pylori. One test is called an Upper GI (gastrointestinal) series, which is an x-ray of the upper GI tract, the esophagus, stomach, and the duodenum. Another is an endoscopy, which is a procedure involving the use of snaking, thin, flexible tube with a camera down the esophagus, through the stomach, and into the small intestine to see the upper GI tract. Blood tests may also be conducted, physicians look for antibodies in the blood that show exposure to H. Pylori. A stool test and a urea breath test may also be an option. A stool test involves taking a sample of the patient’s stool to see if there is any evidence of infection. A urea breath test is used to check if there is any presence of gas produced by the bacterium (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2013). There are a few treatments available for the H. Pylori infection. They include antibiotics to kill the bacteria, medication to reduce the production of stomach acid, and surgery to treat ulcers. A change of diet may also be helpful. Physicians often advise patients to avoid eating spicy, fatty, and acidic foods to avoid inflammation.
