Period 4
Henry Ford as a Pioneer of Industry
During the Industrial Revolution the United States of America was faced with many changes. Some of these changes would be assembly lines, new chemical manufacturing and iron production processes, improved efficiency of water power, the increasing use of steam power, and the development of mechanical tools. One person who helped to create some of these inventions and innovations as a pioneer of industry, was Henry James Ford.
In 1896, Henry Ford completed his first vehicle. He called it the “Quadricycle”.
The Quadricycle was a light metal frame (made to fit a bicycle wheels) and it was powered by a twocylinder, fourhorsepower gasoline engine. (Which at the time twocylinder engines were a new innovation themselves.) In order to improve his design, Ford had to sell the Quadricycle to be able to create other vehicles. So over the next seven years of his early career, Ford had received backing from several various investors. Some of these investors came from the Detroit Automobile Company in 1899.
Eventually these investors got aggravated with Ford’s constant need to improve. He left the Detroit Automobile Company in 1902. In 1903, Ford had established the Ford Motor
Company. Exactly one month later the Ford Motor Company produced the first Ford car . It was a twocylinder, eighthorsepower Model A. At this time only a few cars were produced per day. A group of two to three workers would work on a car at a time. These workers would build the cars by hand with parts that were normally ordered from other companies. Ford’s goal was to create an efficient and reliable automobile that would be affordable for everyone. The result of this goal was the Model T which was released in
October of 1908. The Model T was also called the “Tin Lizzie”. The Model T was instantly a success. Soon Ford had more orders for the Model T than the company could produce. As a result of this
