Hepatitis C was only revealed in the 1980s so it is still a somewhat new disease; some aspects of this disease are still …show more content…
not completely understood. Bacteria, such as Hepatitis (HCV), may infect the donation when blood is collected from donors who have bacterial infection without symptoms. Gram-negative bacteria are hardy to multiple drugs and are increasingly resistant to most available antibiotics (Murray 10).
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection represents a major public health problem in many countries. Approximately 175 million people are chronically infected and 500,000 people die from HCV related liver diseases annually. For instance, many as 75% of severe infection leads to long-lasting infection in some individuals, who are often do not know of their hepatitis c (HCV) status until the presence of medical symptoms years later. Hepatitis C (HCV) infection results in cirrhosis, liver fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma, which subsequently requires liver transplantation. Moreover, hepatitis C (HCV) carriers may accidentally contaminate others via blood transfusion and from iatrogenic procedures or arterial drug use (Wasitthankasem 2).
Many people with hepatitis C (HCV) feel completely well and have few or no symptoms. Any symptoms that may be present are often initially assumed to be due to another illness. Many people have hepatitis C without knowing it. These days’ transmission frequently happens over use of contaminated needles, pumps and other instruments used for injections and other skin-piercing procedures. There is no insect vector or animal reservoir for hepatitis C (HCV) (Sakamoto 1440).
In some cases, hepatitis can be contagious but in others it might not be. Hepatitis is usually contagious when they are transferred by blood such as having sexual contact with another person or having an organ transplant. Hepatitis C is primarily transmitted by infected blood; people have documented how it has been found in semen of infected individuals (Memon 1). For the reason that hepatitis is contagious through blood, healthcare professionals are at a greater risk of contracting the Hepatitis C virus. It is more likely for a nurse or a doctor to get in contact with this virus because they are working around the blood of other people who might have the hepatitis C virus. This kind can be also being spread when two different people are using the same needles such as when someone is getting a tattoo with unsterilized needles or when two people are using the same needle for drugs. Hepatitis can only be passed with blood contact which means that it is not airborne. It is not possible for someone to get hepatitis C by sharing food with someone or getting sneezed on by another person.
Hepatitis C develops slow but there are some health issues that come with it.
Hepatitis C causes a huge damage in the liver which may cause for there to be cancer in the liver or it may even cause some scarring. It might take about twenty years after having the infection that someone gets a scar and this causes for there to be problems in the function of the liver. Because of hepatitis C there are many people suffering from liver disease, which it has gotten to the point that this is the main cause of death in the UK (Wilkie 1). People with hepatitis usually have poor health and this virus also seems to cause a frequency in anxiety and may cause mood disorder symptoms (Aslam 1). In hepatitis A there are not really any complications but in certain situations it might be necessary for someone to get a transplant. There are not any long term effects for this type of hepatitis but people might experience symptoms that come back every six months or so
continuously.
Hepatitis can be prevented by getting vaccines before acquiring the disease. But still it is difficult in some places to get treatment for this virus. In many places around the world like in Serbia, it is difficult to get treated because of the lack of financial resources that they have (BABIĆ 1). Each hepatitis vaccine is for something different; hepatitis A vaccine is important to get if you are someone who is traveling somewhere where there is a high possibility of you getting the disease. Hepatitis B vaccine is important for someone who has sexual contact with another person which has hepatitis B. For hepatitis C there are no vaccines which can prevent it, but having sexual intercourse with multiple partners can increase the risk for someone to get hepatitis C.
