A Hero and Monster of Our Modern-Day World Today’s society comprises of everyday heroes, and unfortunately, everyday monsters. Every person has these in his or her own ways. Characteristics of a hero are someone or something that: has good intentions to improve their society, is a role model to others, is brave, courageous, and many other aspects. Being known as a hero is a huge honor because he or she impacts society in a positive way. Traits of a monster are someone or something that are obviously against the values of a hero. A monster ruins people’s lives and normally has bad intentions in their doings. The different values that define heroes and monsters impact people’s perspective of their own society. A person in the modern-day world that depicts the characteristics of a hero is a firefighter. To begin with, a child primarily dreams to become a firefighter when they are older. Thus, a firefighter represents as a role model to children and people of society. Firefighters extinguish fires, which take an amount of bravery and teamwork (“Firefighter”). Fires are certainly dangerous because in some cases, they expose poisonous gases. These hazardous situations can also be fatal or even kill people. Therefore, a firefighter risks his or her life to save the lives of others. As a modern hero, he or she thinks about others before him or herself. It takes a whole lot of courage and bravery for a hero, like a firefighter to fulfill his or his duties. Thus, a firefighter plays a major role as a hero in today’s society. Something that portrays the characteristics of a modern-day monster is cancer. Cancer is a group of many diseases that associate with cells. These abnormal cells grow and spread through the body, and do not die when they need to (“What Is Cancer?”). In some cases, this may be fatal or even curable.
