Alberto is also the hero because he teaches philosophy to Sophie.
He teaches philosophy to Sophie and that is the only way to escape the book. “She sat down on the kitchen stool with the mysterious letter in her hand. Who are you?” (pg.4)This was the first time he sent her the letters to teach her philosophy. He knew all along that he needed to teach her philosophy and she needed to think philosophically to get out of the book. Alberto taught Sophie philosophy to save her from the book ending. In the end, they are set free because he finished the history of philosophy course. Sophie cannot be the hero of this story because she is learning philosophy from Alberto and would not be free from the book on her own. Albert is also not the hero because he is keeping them in the book and that would make him more of the
villain. The final reason why Alberto is the hero of Sophie’s World is that he found the way out of the book in the first place. He was the one who found out he had to share his knowledge of philosophy with the rest of the fictional world to leave the book with Sophie. He had to know that he needed to teach philosophy to Sophie to leave and save her with himself. “Is Albert God Almighty? No, but he is a higher power than us.” (pg.124) This shows that Alberto knew all along that they had to escape and that Albert was controlling their world. Sophie had no idea that they had to escape or about Albert and Hilde and so she cannot be the hero. Albert knows about himself but he was making them escape and he didn’t help them so he was not the hero. Finally, Alberto is the hero of Sophie’s World for many reasons. One is because he found a way out of Alberto’s book. Another reason is he also taught Sophie philosophy to release them from the book. A final reason is that he helped Sophie escape the book. Sophie is not the hero of the story because she has to learn philosophy from Alberto. Albert is not the hero because he is keeping them in the book. Alberto is the only one who really fits the true hero position.
