The Heroic Cycle of Shrek
Shrek, produced by Dreamworks and shown in 2001, is about an ogre who needs to rescue a princess in order to get his swamp back from being inhabited by the fairytale creatures Lord Farquaad forced to be there. With the company of Donkey, he ventures across the lands to a castle where they meet a dragon and rescue a surprised princess. However, the journey back turns out to be a twist as Princess Fiona and Shrek fall in love and Fiona reveals her secret of being an ogre by night. In the end, they get married and live as all fairytales end – happily ever after. The movie Shrek follows the heroic cycle, turning out to be a grand story of adventure and success. When the fairytale creatures invade Shrek’s house, he is infuriated. He ventures to Lord Farquaad’s town and demands for serenity in his swamp again. This is promised to him, but only if he rescues Princess Fiona from the castle she is locked up in. As Lord Farquaad tells Shrek this, I think it is the call to adventure because Shrek is now being told to leave the peaceful happy place he calls his home and go on an adventure to save a princess. Then, Donkey and Shrek finally leave Lord Farquaad’s village and go through the fields talking about how Shrek is like an onion with many layers. I believe that when the two walk out of the fields and the camera zooms out to a wide view of open land that this is the crossing of the threshold because Shrek is no longer in a familiar place. Also, there seems to be some sort of internal enlightenment that Shrek wants from himself as he mentions the layers and how he has many of them. He already was
