To inform about the untold history of Heroin.
Introduction
1. What comes to mind when I say the word Hero. Perhaps Wonder woman, or NYC firefighters.
2. For some, heroin comes to mind; it supposedly makes people feel heroic, hence the name.
3. But I’m not going to tell you why you shouldn’t use heroin.
4. I’m going to tell you the untold history of heroin.
A. Why heroin was re-synthesized 25 years after it was first invented in 1874.
B. The company Farbenfabriken vorm Fredrick Bayer and CO was the first to commercially sell Heroin in 1898.
C. The reason heroin was able to become deeply rooted in the U.S.

for respiratory disease
a. A scientist, Heinrich Dreser initiated research on Heroin and reported his findings.
b. His research involved clinical trials:
I. Phase 1 on frogs,
II. Phase 2 on bunnies and
III. Phase 3: other people and himself
c. Heinrich reported his finding to several medical journals and doctors.
I. better cough suppressant than codeine
II. Better pain killer than morphine
III. It was safe and non habit forming, unlike the previous.
(This sounded like a miracle medicine for tuberculosis and the perfect opportunity for a business to capitalize on).
B. Therefore, Bayer pharmaceuticals’ trade marked the name Heroin, and started selling it in 1898 according to the History of Heroin.
a. Heinrick Dreser worked for Bayer and saw the potential for heroin
i. Dreser received a share of the sales; incentive. ii. Medicinal value- Bayer only marketed Heroin as a cough suppressant. iii. One year later Bayer was producing nearly 1 ton of heroin and distributed it to 23 countries. iv. (One of those being the US where it has become deeply rooted in our society)
C. The reason for that was heroin was unregulated for 25years.
a. The US, had the largest market of heroin as it was not a regulated product.
i. Heroin was added to cough syrups and sold over counter.
b. Recreational use exploded as morphine addicts turned to heroin
i. Users supported their addiction by selling junk mostly scrap metal- aka JUNKIES
c. 1924 Congress banned Heroin manufacture, sale and distribution
…but they didn’t call it the roaring 20’s, for nothing and the rest is history.
Conclusion
Conclusions: Respiratory diseases steam rolled research for a non addictive substitute for morphine, Bayer pharm. was the first to commercialize Heroin and lax regulations intensified Heroin
addiction.
Outro: So how does this relate to you everyday? Bayer pharmaceuticals discovered a process known as acetylation. This process allowed Bayer to efficiently produce aspirin and heroin, a hero and a villain. Both prevalent in society today
