Hidden Messages In Everyman

When one thinks of a very symbolic selection, what comes to mind to those who have studied the literature of the medieval time is the play Everyman, with many intended hidden messages. Everyman, which is the main character in this selection, reveals his hidden messages and symbolic connections in certain scenes. For example, he starts hating himself for trusting his ‘friends”, which have left him. Another significant character is Goods because it demonstrates people's true emotions toward materialistic things. This is an important part because Everyman then understands how Goods were lent and cannot go with him. Also, Good Deeds is one of the three main characters and expresses itself as both positive and negative. Being able to help in the past was great but cannot continue to do it. Everyman wonders if he can go without Good Deeds. He knows his time is up now.
He realizes he is in a lot of trouble and starts to dislike himself. He demonstrates it in the quote “Thus may I well myself hate” (15). He starts to think to himself, did I really trust my “friend” this whole time? I am a fool for doing so and now he has left me all alone. Also, Everymans thinking about money changes drastically when things he wished for did not go as planned. He thought money would make him feel better, but it didn’t in any way. A quote that proves that is “In hope to have found comfort; but there I had least” (15). He shows that he now thinks and feels different towards all the love he had for money. When you think someone or something will be there for you, there is a probability they are not, like in this
