High School Stereotypes

Besides memorizing denotations and learning formulas, I would like to think high school has a greater, more wholesome purpose; to promote independence and moral thinking. There seems to be a common stereotype that depicts high school students as vapid, immature individuals only concerned with trivialities surrounding them. I think, or at least like to think, that young adults especially recognize the importance of decency and moral correctness in order to develop as people and become capable adults. There is a clear trend present in many significant historical events, that being that everyone has an obligation to objectively identify an atrocity and attempt to stop it, regardless of its “justifications” or hidden “values”. They have manifested themselves in religious scripture, historical context, and in today’s current social landscape. A perfect society or utopia, consisting of equity, respect, and veracity is both contradictory and highly improbable. Humans will always possess the ability of judgment, which can escalate into racism, chauvinism, and overall intolerance. Despite this harsh reality, humans, as the dominant species, have the ability to identify and practice morals, principles, and ethics. And this is a lesson I feel all young people need to understand; regardless of how volatile and cruel life can be, we must remember the importance of decency. Even if it does not directly benefit ourselves, we all must be bound to one common goal; to not shy away in the face of abuse or wrongdoing. This is not anything new, we have been taught these same concepts since grade school. If you see someone being bullied, you help in the most effective way possible, even if you are not involved. The Holocaust was an example of blatant discrimination and brutality being exercised against many defenseless people. This largescale persecution taught me about justice and the importance of instilling virtues such as bravery, courage, and altruism. These are values I believe all young people should adhere to and in the future, I hope to pass on the same values to my
