U.C. Berkeley: home to sun-kissed biologists and liberal student activists. These are the two main stereotypes associated with this prestigious university. While these two attributes do form much of the campus’ culture, there is so much more to be discovered at University of California, Berkeley. Situated in Berkeley, California, overlooking the San Francisco Bay, lies an urban campus with a thriving Greek life. In addition to a myriad of social and extracurricular activities, are thousands of stressed out students learning at an Ivy League caliber.…
I conducted a survey of 40 of my peers to find out their first impressions of me. I discovered that people thought I was nice but not naive, bizarre but in a cool and relaxed way, studious and outgoing but yet still laid back and chill, and I am happy to say good looking but (unfortunately) not in a movie star way. People also had the misconception that I was quiet, but by our second encounter, this quickly disappeared as they realized I was the complete opposite. All of my 40 peers now agree that I am an effortlessly loud presence. I would like to change this perception of shyness because it is not who I am. I lead the male portion of my chorus and blast out the solos, participate in class so much that it is almost like I am having a conversation…
We all have encountered some type of stereotype or prejudices. A stereotype that I had to face was age prejudice by me being so young sometimes people don't set the high expectations for you that other people would at an older age because they expect for you to make mistakes. At times my mindset isn't where most kids are at my age. I skipped pre k and I am supposed to be in the 8th grade. When I tell people my age they be like " OMG you are young to be the grade that you are in" this is a perfect example of what I am stating that people sometimes think that you have to be average and can't go over and beyond your years.…
As a child, being black was never an anomaly for me. I was educated on the issues of white privilege and how black people are often targeted in a world riddled with injustice; my family on my mother’s side hailed from the deep south, so my grandparent’s lives were obviously filled with the turmoil of the racist south. While equality was always something on my mind, even as a child, being born (and raised for a semi-short while) in New York opened my eyes to the many cultures, religious, personalities, genders, and sexualities of the world. Despite this, the general heteronormative nature of the black community (and the bigotry that can spawn from it) worried me especially in a time where I was still learning about myself.…
I have experienced many stereotypes throughout my life. In high school we had a project that involved asking people what they thought of us when they first met the person who was conducting the question. When I had asked my peers I got the most shocking responses. I was stereotype as the dumb girl who looked conceited and wasn’t going to get anywhere in my life. Even though that was high school, today I still get the stereotyped as a dumb and mean girl.…
Stereotypes. Stereotypes play a major and huge role today in society negatively and positively. Stereotypes can form truthful and untruthful results that can mentally, emotionally and physically destroy a person, race or culture which we see today. Stereotype is a fixed over generalized belief about a particular group or class of people (Meclod). I chose to write on the topic stereotype because in society today we as humans stereotype one another all the time and do not realize it. Research have found that stereotype exist of different races, cultures, or ethic groups (Meclod). Today our world is so based off what the next person thinks and what they will say and do if something is not done a certain way and it bothers me. Don’t judge a book by its cover, no one should be judge for…
I should have focused more on my grades this year. By attending many social events, waiting until the last minute to complete work, and refusing to study my grades began to drop. I feel that if I would have put more effort into my school work I would have achieved the grades I am capable of getting. By hanging out with friends and putting off work my grades gradually began to drop. Your senior year is not the year to slack off in; it would have better prepared me for college and set the tone for how I should work if I had just put in the effort necessary to achieve outstanding grades. When in college I cannot make this same mistake; all of my dreams of obtaining a decent job after college could be ruined.…
As the United States becomes more diverse, colleges are seeing increases in minority students. However, this increase does not mean that the same number of students are leaving their college with a degree. Minorities face many challenges in college, some of which have persisted since elementary school. Although colleges try to diminish these difficulties by having different organizations where students can go to seek help, the students have already formed the mindset that they do not do as well as their white counterparts from micro-aggressions, learned thoughts and behaviors, and comparisons of resources.…
The way we present ourselves to society often gives them a predetermined assumption of the type of person we are. Even though it's not always safe to assume a person's personality based on their appearance, people seem to do it anyways. Sometimes people are mistreated due to their appearance, but they purposely present themselves the way they do because of a choice to be unique. As a student in a fairly large high school, it was easy to see the different "stereotypes" of people, as they tended to hang out together. This past experience shows how the outside world can treat you based upon a certain classification they choose to place you in.…
During group time, or any activity that does not particularly interest her, Anastasia will get up and try to do some other activity. She continues to get up and move around even after the teacher asks her to sit down and stop moving. After a little bit of standing up and down, Anastasia crawls around the other students, and starts to play with the items behind a board, in particular a felt dog, During this time the teacher tries to re-direct Anastasia back to what the class was doing.…
A math teacher has a racial stereotype that Asian students get higher scores than other ethnic students in the math exams. This stereotype can lead to confirmation bias when the teacher remembers Asian students get higher scores and ignore when the other ethnic students get higher scores. This stereotype also can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy that the teacher may pay more attention on Asian students, therefore Asian students' scores get higher and it confirms the teacher's stereotype.…
Stereotypes are widespread beliefs about individuals that are formed just because they belong to a certain group, “regardless of their individual characteristics” (OpenStax, 2014, p. 434). Often these stereotypes prove to be harmful and lead to prejudice mindsets and discriminatory actions. While some stereotypes may be based on physiological characteristics, they are taught, not inherited, and therefore this is a social phenomenon. Social psychologists seek to understand how individuals interact with one another and the impact of their interactions, and in this case how stereotypes are formed and their effect on society. The phenomenon of stereotypes is best explained by three different aspects of social psychology; self-fulfilling prophecy,…
The biggest challenge facing college students today is accountability. I say accountability because we live in time where everyone is rewarded for everything that they do whether it deserves an award or not. We live in a world where political correctness is hurting the children of my generation. I see this in my peers and sometimes in myself and it’s not a pleasant thing. The students currently in college represent the shift in thinking and rearing of children. The students and the ones whose parents/teachers were told what they could and could not do all the things they were taught as children were no longer acceptable. We now have a generation that doesn’t know how to fail. Not because everything they do is right or perfect but, because…
Stereotype plays a major role in our society today because it’s being use every day by most individuals. People are being judged and misunderstood based upon what society thinks. The development of stereotypes has changed based on the change in society. Stereotype thoughts are usually harmful, based on how different groups of people see others on their beliefs, appearance and behaviors. I was stereotyped as a typical Asian during my life, which has affected me socially.…
The college admissions in modern society are in my opinion too competitive and the universities have too high demands on the students. The students today have so much pressure on their grades and need to fight too hard for their spot in the universities. Even a B can destroy your dreams of studying at a university or college.…
